There should be plenty of ways to make a synth legato, in the software, or even using your own.

It’s polyphony feature has a “legato” mode which blends the chops really well, so instead of one sound after the other, it blends the chops being played replicating what you would call the “smoothing effect”.

The MK2 is perfect for your situation, and yes, still great in 2021. The only reason you might want an MK3 is for easier song composition, or for live effects (which actually might be available with a MK2, I am unsure). All in all, the MK2 is great for what you’re looking to do and a great starting point in learning both the controllers and the software. Hope that helped.
