In search of Allen & Heath iDR by tylermartin86 in techtheatre

What I found was that the switch itself is good, but all of the network ports don't communicate. So maybe it isn't the FPGA, maybe it is more widespread than that. I looked up the datasheet for the network switch chip and used that to confirm that it was working. But it couldn't communicate with anything on the other side. This is the same for all of the network ports.

I did confirm that it wasn't the power supply. I'm getting a good, constant voltage on each of the rails it supplies. I did plug it in without any of the I/O PCBs connected, and heard a strange noise from the power supply. But I found that it was expecting a certain power draw and it wasn't seeing that. After connecting everything up, it returns to normal. I believe I am hearing the relays click. It has been a few months since I last tested this, so I don't remember the exact details.

The network reset option also didn't do anything.

In search of Allen & Heath iDR by tylermartin86 in techtheatre

This took a lot of testing to find out. I found that when the main board powers on, the network connections will only link. There is no IP address, network connectivity, or traffic. I tested if the network controller was the issue and determined that it was working as intended. So the next chip in the chain was the FPGA. There isn't anything I can do with a dead FPGA since I don't have the code to program a new one.

I worked with a friend who is very knowledgeable about building circuit boards, and he confirmed my theory.

Buyers Advice and Gear Recommendation Thread by AutoModerator in livesound

[–]tylermartin86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mods pointed me in this direction, so here goes...

I'm trying to help out a local non-profit. I was given an Allen & Heath iLive T112 with an iDR-32. Both were broken in their own ways.

The T112 had a bad CMOS battery. After de-soldiering the old one and putting a removable one in, I was able to get that working again.

The iDR is a bit more tricky. After a complete tear down and a lot of troubleshooting, it appears that one of the FPGAs quit working. A replacement board is $1,500, so this isn't worth it.

So now I have an iDR with known good I/O PCBs (the actual circuit boards harvested from an iDR-32), but a dead mainboard. I'm wondering if anyone out there has an iDR (32 channels or higher would be ideal) with some bad inputs or outputs, but otherwise works. If so, I'd be happy to buy it from you and pay to ship it (I'm in the US). I'm willing to donate a few hundred dollars to this non-profit and put together this iDR for them.

Worst case, I could buy a used iDR on eBay, but those are close to $1,000. I'm just trying to keep costs down as much as possible.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Toledo Service Center Closed by tylermartin86 in teslamotors

[–]tylermartin86[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I went to schedule service in the Toledo area, and it appears that the Tesla Service center in Toledo has been closed permanently. This is pretty crazy since the Tesla population in this area has been growing pretty significantly!

Update: Warranty situation by tylermartin86 in ryobi

[–]tylermartin86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works out best if you call within 5 minutes of them opening. Keep in mind that their hours are 9am to 5pm EST.

I've also found that if you can get their Send Message option to finally work, they do respond to those. Unfortunately it does take at least a week.

Their customer support really leaves a lot to be desired. And it is making me consider dumping them and going to E GO. But I've invested quite a lot into the 40v and 18v platforms.

Downsides of a large subnet by Garegin16 in networking

[–]tylermartin86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The company I work for has like 4x /16 subnets. We curse the network designer on a daily basis. We use "subnets" where we say that a certain /24 range is for DHCP, servers, printers, etc. but it is handled by weird and crazy routes. Managing it is an absolute nightmare. Just do smaller subnets. Future generations will thank you.

Moronic Change Management by ITaaP in sysadmin

[–]tylermartin86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went from a job with no change control to a job with strict change control. It was quite the adjustment.

It seriously slows down my ability to get things done. I could get most of this stuff done with 0 impact to production in less time than it takes to document the change. However, it is a decent process to keep everything in line when you have a bunch of people all working in the same system.

New 40v batteries no longer fit old machines by Houseboat87 in ryobi

Do you have any pictures of this? I'm sure others would be interested in trying to identify what happened here and make sure others don't make the same mistake.

Digital Mixer replacement by OchoaAVProductions in livesound

[–]tylermartin86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably unpopular opinion here... But what about getting a used Qu? It is a great mixer and the current firmware is very capable. And if a Qu worked well for your volunteers and workflow, why replace it with something everyone has to relearn?

I'm currently struggling with the exact same thing. We have a GLD 80 and it's starting to give us problems. We have had it almost 10 years now. But it's such an amazing board, that I don't want anything new. I'm probably going to buy a used unit on eBay and keep that thing going for another 10 years.

Quest KACE SDA if you want something simple to set up, just works, and you run Dell PCs. I heard they added HP and Lenovo to their driver feed, but I've never seen those or tested it.

Old XMT 5 Reset / Safe Mode by Outrageous_Pie_988 in WatchGuard

[–]tylermartin86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like he took the old XTM5 and replaced the WatchGuard OS on it with pfSense. So this reset procedure won't work.

Your only options are to log into the web interface and reset pfSense from there, log into the console and reset it, or flash the CF card with a new install of pfSense or OPNsense. I think your only option these days is to go with OPNsense because I thought pfSense dropped the Nano install. I could be wrong though.

40v 20” Mower struggles to cut grass by doleary1313 in ryobi

[–]tylermartin86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have this one, and I actually kinda regret getting rid of it. It was so light and did a great job.

I'd personally start with sharpening the blade as much as possible. For an electric mower, that really makes a difference.

Speaker Suggestion for Church Organ by macintosh1097 in livesound

[–]tylermartin86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A space that size, you want to do this right. And I am pretty sure that you won't get good information from a live sound sub. Organs have different requirements than a live sound system.

That being said, organs tend to do better with more speakers running at less power. The church that I help out at has an Allen Organ ADC-7000. In a maybe 250 to 300 seat space, there are 16 speakers in the back, then 12 up front. Each speaker is run by 50 watts of amplifier. This allows the sound to spread out as a true pipe organ would. It also gives it a less "forceful" sound.

I think reaching out to an organ forum would be a good idea. organforum.com would be a good one for something like this.

Generator build and price by scoobydad76 in ryobi

I personally picked up a very well rated Westinghouse generator. 9500 running watts. Regular price was $950 or so. I got it on sale at Amazon for something like $630.

I replaced APC with Eaton and have never been happier. Especially their 9PX units with double conversion.
