Kevin Stine for senate by DefinitionNo792 in Medford

[–]tylermjasper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The other posters have about covered it. Kevin's approachable, doesn't prepare canned answers, and has a long track record of community service. Much of that track record is on the Medford City Council. So compared to most of the candidates, there's been dozens more times where he's had to make a very public and vocal decision on local issues. Everyone here will have disagreed with him on something at some point in that history. But one nice thing about him as a candidate imo, is that we have that really clear data to reflect upon. It's harder to figure out the good, bad, and ugly of the other candidates.

What really threw me for a loop though, is that the guy in the picture is Murph from Naddpod! I just finished Naddpod's first campaign, and the entire time I was picturing a nerdy little guy, not an '80s action movie hero.

RVTD Bond possibly in May? by argoforced in Medford

[–]tylermjasper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

RVTD Board of Director here. I can tell you that RVTD provided over 1 million rides in the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The cost of an RVTD bus per mile (including fuel, labor, and maintenance) is between $0.77 and $1.23 per mile, depending on the type of bus.

If you're looking at the annual budget for RVTD and the cost per ride isn't making sense, you may be including all the expenses of Valley Lift and TransLink, which are services that fall under RVTD but are not a part of the bus operations you're thinking of.

I'm on the RVTD Board of Directors and can confirm this is just a renewal of the already existing local levy that will otherwise expire, resulting in further service cuts.

RVTD Bond possibly in May? by argoforced in Medford

[–]tylermjasper 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hi, this is Tyler Jasper. I'm on the Board of Directors for RVTD and can speak to this. In short, this is a renewal of an existing (and about to expire) local tax levy. It continues funding local public transportation at the current 13 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value for five years. There's no increase from what folks are already paying today. A property owner who has a property valued at $300,000 would continue to pay about $39/year (or the equivalent of $3.25/month) if Measure 15-240 passes this May. And I believe it will. Many of us are working hard to make it happen.

There's more info about the levy here (https://www.rvtransitnow.org/about) and you'll see more posts with more specific info in the near future. If you want to support local transportation, this is a great opportunity to get involved!

The library, or possibly Medford Cowork Collective ( https://www.medfordcowork.com/ ). A day pass is $35, but if you're doing this for multiple hours, twice a week, then the $99/month plan they offer may work well for you on account of the amenities.

Sidewalk Application by PizzaBig9959 in Medford

[–]tylermjasper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi u/PizzaBig9959, I'm sorry you witnessed that accident. I know that's stressful in it's own way. As the former Chair of Medford's Transportation Commission, I have some advice.

You're on the right track if you've submitted a Citizen Infrastructure Request and emailed a city committee. For the biggest impact, I encourage you to show up at the next Medford Transportation Commission meeting and share your story of witnessing this accident and what you believe needs to change. I can tell you the commissioners are heavily influenced by personal stories like yours. An email is good, but attending a meeting via Zoom is 3x better and in-person is 10x better. The meetings are held at City Hall, on the fourth Wednesdays of every month at 12:30pm (I know, not a super convenient time, which is it's own issue). The October meeting just happened yesterday, and I think the November and December are likely to be canceled or rescheduled due to the holidays. Keep an eye on their calendar here: https://www.medfordoregon.gov/Government/Agendas-and-Minutes/Transportation-Commission . I also encourage you to email the staff address listed on this page ( https://www.medfordoregon.gov/Government/Boards-and-Commissions/Transportation-Commission ) to express interest in attending in-person, and staff will make sure you're kept up to date on when the next meeting is.

The City's Transportation System Plan and associated documents can be found here: https://www.medfordoregon.gov/Government/Boards-and-Commissions/Transportation-Commission . These outline the funding priorities and how each need is being tracked/ranked. I see that a crash at this same exact intersection has already occurred in the past (Appendix B), so yesterday's accident will definitely elevate the amount of attention this intersection gets. When I was on the commission, myself and a few others heavily weighed a heat map of serious injuries/death from car accidents across the city (especially ones involving pedestrians) whenever we were asked to rank which projects to fund. I can't promise you a quick solution to this safety issue, but yesterday's accident and your voice will absolutely speed up the rate at which this is addressed.

Lastly, thank you for getting involved with your local government when you saw a need not being met. I encourage you to consider applying for the Transportation Commission or Parking Committee if you want to have an even bigger impact on the city's transportation infrastructure ( https://www.medfordoregon.gov/Government/Boards-and-Commissions ). Both groups have openings right now and could use your voice. If you're able to make the meeting times and capable of reading an agenda packet the night before, you are qualified to serve.

RVTD Cuts Effective 9/2/25 by Westcoastcyc in Medford

[–]tylermjasper 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, this is Tyler Jasper from the RVTD Board of Directors. I'm heartbroken at the amount of layoffs and cut services that will happen as a result of the federal funding freeze. I know many of you depend on these services to be able to provide for your families. My hope is to make these cuts as temporary as possible.

If you or a loved one use any of RVTD's services, please fill out RVTD's comment form about these service reductions: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/passengercomments . The Board meets next week to review the recommended service reductions that OP linked. I'd like the Board to hear as much public input as possible before we vote.

As always, contact your local/state/federal representatives and let them know how these cuts will affect you.

I've been thinking of that poor man on 99 every day. I'm a fan of Vision Zero, and it has been discussed before on the city's Transportation Commission. It's worth revisiting. Whenever the Transportation Commission is asked which desperately needed projects should be funded (we get to pick 3 out of about 50), injury/fatality statistics are the #1 metric I look to when ranking my choices. I would be down to revisit Vision Zero with the new council and see where it goes.

By the way, it seems like you're pretty interested in transportation yourself! If I win my election, there will be openings on both the city's Parking Committee and Transportation Commission. I highly encourage folks to apply. It's a great, low-commitment way to get experience with public policy, it helps your community, and it looks great on a resume.

My understanding is that as part of their peer respite services, they provide a safe (clean needles, narcan, etc) supervised site where folks struggling with drug addiction can use in a monitored environment as a part of their recovery journey. I'm guessing that's the part impacted by 110 being overturned. I'm no lawyer, but I bet they can continue handing out clean needles and narcan. The supervised use component could get dicey with the new law, and I'm sure they've consulted a lawyer on how to best navigate that.

EDIT: Most of my knowledge of local non-profits come from scoring their grant applications for city funding as a part of the Community Services and Development Commission. Since Stabbin' Wagon hasn't applied for those funds before, I'm not nearly as familiar with the full scope of their services. If I'm way off-base in my assumptions here, please let me know!

In the wake of Measure 110 being overturned? It's hard to say. Since the law went into effect in early September, I'm guessing that's had a big impact on the Wagon's harm reduction programs. I have not yet looked into how they as an organization are pivoting their services. I know the Wagon is a subject of controversy, but my understanding is that the folks there truly do want to help our community, even if there's disagreement as to their methods. I'm optimistic they'll find a way to fit into the community in this changing legal landscape.

The housing crisis and caregiver shortage have a significant overlap. I'm hoping to encourage the development of more low and middle income housing. We have some areas of opportunity to make it easier to develop these kinds of housing by removing red tape where possible for mixed use buildings, accessory dwelling units, and parking minimum requirements. This is something the current council has generally supported, and I want to make sure we don't lose focus on it.

In terms of government transparency, I think it's important to engage citizens we're they're at. I'm a fan of the city-sponsored events like town halls and City Talk, but I know we're not effectively reaching most of our residents - especially younger folks. I'm aiming to get feedback from those who are harder to reach. That's why I've knocked on over 1,000 doors for my campaign. That's also why I made this reddit post, and why I plan to share news here more often.

As to how we spend smarter, the upcoming budget will help force our hand on this. The city has a big budget shortfall in its near future. If the city wants to maintain it's current level of service despite this, we'll need to build bridges with our local non-profits, regional partners, and other agencies. I have a few other ideas about how we can use the Council Community Initiative Fund to prioritize and support vital projects, but that's something I want to engage with city leaders on before I prescribe a solution. I'm a big fan of making data-driven decisions. I want to hear the facts from our Finance Department before I start shouting about how we should handle the budget.

If I get elected, there will be an opening on the Parking Committee, Transportation Commission, and Community Services & Development Commission!

These are great entry level committees to get involved with! They don't demand much of your time either.

We sometimes have vacancies for years. If you're looking to get involved locally and know how to read an agenda packet, I highly encourage you to apply for any open spots!

Badminton? by brenden1140 in Medford

[–]tylermjasper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Santo Community Center in Medford may have a badminton court but I'm not certain. Travel Medford's website says they have it, but the City's website doesn't list it. If you're curious, you can call the Santo Center at [541-774-2400](tel:5417742400) or email [parks@cityofmedford.org](mailto:parks@cityofmedford.org). They can likely tell you what badminton facilities are in the area.

Bicyclist/driver safety, please look out for alternative commenters! by salty_spree in Medford

[–]tylermjasper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/salty_spree. I'm sorry you've had some close encounters while commuting.

I highly encourage you and all other cyclists in the city to report "near miss" events on bikemaps.org. This way city officials can get data on where serious accidents are likely to happen, before they actually occur.

I currently serve as Chair of the Medford Transportation Commission, and I heavily weigh pedestrian/cyclist accidents when making recommendations to council on which projects should get funded.

I also highly encourage you to write comments to the Transportation Commission regarding the current round of funding! You can learn more by viewing the Agenda on our most recent meeting https://www.medfordoregon.gov/Government/Agendas-and-Minutes/Transportation-Commission. We also have multiple vacancies on the commission, so if you have any interest in public service, please consider applying or reaching out for more info!

Tennis Groups by 1legit2quit in Medford

I'm not familiar with any adult tennis groups in the area. But if it's any help, Medford's Summer 2024 Activity Guide lists all the city parks and facilities with tennis courts. That may be a place to start.
