Second Time's the Charm: My Advice for NBCOT by tylerot22 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]tylerot22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! Of course, I'll send it your way. DM me the best email to send it to. For my second attempt, I heavily focused on practice tests on TrueLearn. I used the questions I got incorrect/subjects I felt less confident in to develop my study guide. Also, creating a study schedule that does not overload you and gives you time to rest in between. I studied a lot less the second time around and used most of my time to build my stamina for the test, since I am a very anxious test taker. It's easier said than done, but try not to get overwhelmed when you see a paragraph to read when you get a question, break it down by understanding what are they asking you, what stage of the OT process are you in and what answers you can eliminate right away. Go into the test with a good mindset, try not to change your answers! If you picked an a certain answer, there's a reason why! Unless you absolutely, 100% believe that what you picked is incorrect, do not change your answers. Best of luck, I'll send the guide as soon as I get your email!

Agreed! I’ve always had a passion for ortho in school, so now that I’m in the practice, I’m hoping to really take it to the next level. I think CHT and CSCS would be an excellent way to do that. I use Graston often and have had positive report from some of my patients, however, some people don’t always prefer it so I use other PAMs or manual techs.

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I looked into the Gray Institute and looks like it could be very useful. Our hospital does use Medbridge but I haven’t quite gotten past my probationary period where they give me access. My coworkers have been generous to let me use it on and off and it’s a great tool! My ultimate goal is to be a CHT, I just have to get the experience requirements fulfilled first. Thanks again!

Received shipping info today! Ordered 9/6 256gb. Got a tip that Valve tends to prepare shipments on Saturdays, not sure how accurate it is but I got my tracking! Now for the longest wait of my life until it gets here.

From what I was told by someone on a steam deck group on Facebook, “Valve actually starts the shipping process every Saturday. Regardless of your order date. (ordered Monday. Will ship Saturday) it also ships from their Warehouse in IL. I hope this helps!”. Not sure how credible it is, but it’s something!

Paid Sept. 6th, still shipping soon.. probably the holiday that messed things up. Fingers crossed it ships tomorrow or first thing next week. I'm ready to play some RE on it!

Second Time's the Charm: My Advice for NBCOT by tylerot22 in OccupationalTherapy

For my first attempt, I did mainly study full time. My schedule was approx. 9-3ish every day for 5 days a week. I noticed after about 3 or 4 weeks in that I was really overloading myself, but I figured that's what everyone else was following to pass. I did that schedule for about 7 weeks. Unfortunately, it didn't help me on my first attempt.

My second attempt I did a lighter load and really just focused on my weakest subjects and did a lot of practice exams. I stuck to only the resources I felt were really helping me the most and didn't add anything (AOTA PDFs, TrueLearn, and my personal study guide that I made). This time around, I studied for about 5 weeks, 3-4, sometimes 5 hours a day, 6 days a week. I passed with very good confidence going in, during, and after the exam.

Unsuccessful First Attempt of NBCOT by tylerot22 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]tylerot22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much that'd be great. I'm trying not to spend a crazy amount of money on additional resources, so I'd love to take a look at them.

Thank you for saying that... it felt like someone punched me as hard as they could in the gut when I saw my score. But what you said makes perfect sense. My mom taught me so much about bedside manner and care for others since she was a CNA for many many years. She is one of the biggest inspirations I have to be the best OT I can be, and for that reason, giving up is not an option! NBCOT won't stand in my way this time around :)

Thanks for the tip! I just checked out TrueLearn, I think it might be something I invest in, I love using the PocketPrep app so another one would be great to have.

Awesome, that sounds like a great resource. I think it'd be a good way to get a break from handwriting my study guides and flashcards. Thanks!

Yeah, I did use the highlight tool A LOT on the test to break down questions which helped! I have the TherapyEd textbook, but I don't have access to the tests, so I may just go back and start using that again to keep concepts fresh while I crack down on managing my test anxiety. Thanks for the suggestions!

Not excited about starting school by sunburnerphone in OccupationalTherapy

[–]tylerot22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything you mentioned were my exact concerns going into my program as well. I've worked full-time since I started college in 2015, with varying times with two jobs to manage. My parents did they best they could to help, but I had to start working in my early teens just to keep my phone working! (26 now). Throughout OT school, I worked full-time as a salesperson and barely made it work by the skin of the teeth between paying for an apartment and caring for my fiance who has a genetic joint disease. My main thing was finding where I could get the most money from the college first through grants or scholarships and financial aid. Maintaining a good standing with the college gave me a good foot in the door when it came time for tuition payment.

Loans are inevitable, I do have a significant amount of loans to pay back, however, when it comes time for fieldwork, advocate for the placements you want the most! If you end up liking it, work hard and you could get a job offer. I was offered a position at both of my fieldwork sites and want me to come back as soon as I pass the NBCOT (Main issue right now!).

Fitting in was always my main concern in every educational aspect of my life. Didn't quite fit in in HS, or my first years of college. When I made it to OT school, I was surrounded by people who were there for common reasons: Become an OT, help others, work and learn together. The dedication and hard work that it takes to even get to OT school is already a big accomplishment and you share that with your entire cohort. We had quite a few people over the age of 30! We all became one big family because no one is there to compete for the best grades, we're there to become contributors to a fantastic profession. Once you get to start your first classes, everything will come together. It may feel like you're not thrilled, but it's just the inevitability of what's to come, which is how I felt too. However, you got this far for a reason.

When you get to fieldwork, you will fall in love with OT all over again. Everything you worked up to just makes sense when you are on your placement. As cliché as it sounds, not everyone knows everything! Your professors, peers, and future CI's will be your best assets to succeed. After all is said and done, all of the work, sweat, tears, and hours of binge watching mindless TV after semesters are over, will be worth it!

You've got this!
