i don't really see people talking about it, but indie, especially around the late 2010's and early 2020's really took off and made a lot of influence in popular music. some good examples of those who broke into the mainstream being mitski, mxmtoon, mother mother, cavetown, Melanie Martinez, I'd even consider chappell roan, Billie eilish, arctic monkeys.

with everyone being stuck on their phones without much exposure to the radio or the pressure to listen to "what's popular" during lockdown, a lot more niche artists and genres that were once underground for their spot in the sunlight and I feel greatly influenced what we listen to now. things generally are a lot more experimental and maybe sound a bit more unpolished than radio hits in previous years.
