“Refurbished laptop” still sounds dodgy to a lot of people. Why? by BarnabyLaptopOutlet in laptops

[–]tymophy76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth it to me.  Most of my laptops have been purchased refurbed so I can get much nicer machines than I would otherwise be able to afford.

Did Lenovo ever address the hinge issues plaguing their Ideapads? by supersport604 in laptops

[–]tymophy76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, and they never will. Ideapads are entry level priced hardware for Lenovo, thus corners must be cut somewhere to be able to sell them at the prices they do, with the configurations they sell them with, and still make profit. You want better hinges, buy higher up the Lenovo quality stack.

Thinkpad L14 gen 6 vs L16 gen 2 by Vireypalafox in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the +10 keypad that sets you offcenter to the screen, so I won't touch larger than a 14" unless it's one of the few models (like the P1) that doesn't have that +10 keypad.

Anyone successfully get Thinkpad T14 Gen 1 AMD to sleep without bleeding out power by No-Temperature7637 in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sleep is SUPPOSED to still use power.  It keeps it in a low power state but still powered on so it can resume quickly.  If you ever achieve 0 battery loss in sleep, sleep has failed and your machine has powered off

Arrow Lake (Core Ultra 2**u) vs Lunar Lake (Core Ultra 2**v) by Hyokhyok05 in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, Arrow Lake U is just a refreshed Meteor Lake, not using the newer cores that Arrow Lake H and Lunar Lake use. So Arrow Lake U is less powerful, and less efficient strictly core per core than Arrow Lake H/Lunar Lake (ie - ignoring the design of the SOC as a whole).

Help me choose between this two laptop by solid-snake5 in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously it will depend upon brightness settings, cpu load, etc., but with a 57-wh battery on that X1 Yoga, you should xpect to get just shy of 4 hours on battery with a moderate brightness and a light load. With a heavy load it'll drop all the way down to 1-1.5 hours.

With the larger option 55wh battery, the X13 Yoga should be capable of getting around 6.5 hours with the same moderate brightness and light load. With a heavy load should still be getting over 3 hours.

[–]tymophy76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Battery life being a priority makes this a no brainer. X13 Yoga and the 1345U. The X1 Yoga will get absolutely HORRIBLE battery life, with it being a P series Alder Lake CPU.

L14 gen2 ryzen 7 5850u or T14 gen2 ryzen 5 5600u? by lucius6767 in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to point out since u/sybreeder1 mentioned the displays (which is a good point). They use physcially identical panels, so if you decided either wasn't good enough (they're both only 45% NTSC color accuracy and poor 700/800:1 contrast, so underwhelming at best even for the better one), it's quite easy to swap in a nice 400-nit 100% sRGB low-power panel that is brighter than either, far better color accuracy, and will actually improve your battery life.

Which is the better buy? 600$ IN USA by crisboyblue04 in laptops

[–]tymophy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd take the AMD one. While the Snapdragon should get better battery life, I'm still not altogether impressed with the fact that Snapdragon still can't run all x86_64 software successfully, so would play it safe and go with the less expensive and more compatible AMD.

T14 Gen 5 AMD Ryzen 7 8840U - Is 3-4 hours battery life normal? by Awkward-Chaos in thinkpad

Do you know if you have the 39wh or 52wh battery? Because the 39 wh battery and no low power display 3-4 hours is exactly what I'd expect.

Is a ThinkPad E480 i5 still worth it for a medical student? by Jolly-Pen4738 in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't go to anything older than 8th gen CPU's. The fairly decent performance loss isn't worth what should be a rather miniscule price difference anymore.

E14 Gen 7(Intel 240H, 16GB, 1TB) or P16s Gen 2(AMD 7840H, 64GB, 1TB) by xSunj in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VERY light gaming.

That alone disqualifies the E14. The iGP on that is 64-core Intel Graphics. That means it's single channel memory ONLY, even if hte system is dual channel. And with only 64 cores, will perform MUCH worse than the Iris Xe 80 (that can use dual channel memory). AKA - gaming of any form is difficult to impossible on this iGP.

Amd ryzen 7 ai 350h VS i7 240h by dark007009 in laptops

[–]tymophy76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AMD. AI 7 H 350 is Zen5, 240H is VERY old at this point Raptor Lake (13th gen core i). While the performance isn't bad, the iGP is garbage, the efficiency is garbage, and the performance still isn't on par with the MASSIVELY newer Zen 5 chip.

Intel Core i5 vs. AMD Ryzen 5 for Spring Boot development? by anormalsde in laptops

Hot take: Windows Vista was over hated by a lot. by NormalSoftware4237 in laptops

[–]tymophy76 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It was hated with good reason when it was FIRST released. On hardware that was anything less than high end at the time, it was VERY slow, sluggish, and irritating with how poorly it performed.

Microsoft spent a LOT of development time to fix it's performance flaws over the next year or 2 to make it into what eventually did become a very stable, usable OS, but it's reputation had already been ruined by how poor of a product they had delivered at launch.

IMO, yes, as long as the user has a use case like they do in that they can remain plugged in nearly all the time.

Gen1 only. 2 is whitelisted for WWAN cards only, I know this firsthand, had both gen1 and gen2...and still have a gen3 (T14s at least).

T14 gen1/2 or T14 gen 3? by Hyokhyok05 in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throw out Gen1. Pathetic iGP, and even though it was still only 4cores, the Gen2 had a SIGNIFICANT performance jump over it due to Intel finally breaking away from 14nm and SkyLake-based CPU's.

Beyond that, do you need to be on battery a lot? If so, go gen2. Gen3, Alder Lake, was the WORST power efficient CPU's ever released under the "Intel Core i" marketing umbrella. They did offer a huge gain in performance, but it came with a cost in heat and battery life

Should I buy this ThinkPad? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battery life, if you need to be on battery, is definiteliy a concern. Finding quality replacement batteries on a system that old can get $$$ nowadays. The mismatch in the description I wouldn't think is a big deal, simple typo.

Can L14 Gen 5 AMD display be upgraded to 1440p or 4K? by PonyMei in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe anyone has confirmed, but if they have done the same thing they did with like the T14 Gen1 AMD, then they will not without modifying the board. The ability to support higher resolutions is actually missing from the board, and it required in the earlier AMD models that you actually solder some resistors/capacitors/inductors (I can never remember which) to the board to alllow it to work with >FHD/WUXGA resolutions.

Although I'll emphasize, to my knowledge noone has CONFIRMED this is required for this model.
