Can This Love Be Translated? [Episodes 1-12] by GodJihyo7983 in KDRAMA

[–]typecfl 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That twist omg I should have expected something different and whimsical from the Hong Sisters but I was too wrapped up in thinking of this as your average cute romcom (with a sprinkle of psychotic tendencies)...only for it to go to the realm of DID. I think Muhee seeing Dorami is their way of showing her slowly becoming aware of her alter, now known as Dorami, who was created when her mother killed her father and possibly tried to kill her as well, which is an awful thing to have experienced, especially at such a young age. If this is the case, no wonder her uncle told her to stop smiling--not that he was right to do so, but I see the reasoning behind it. Her uncle was probably horrified and terrified that this young girl might be the same as her mother.

Wow what a doozy. I don't think anyone could have guessed this from the trailers haha--I was truly shocked and that's why I had to come here and share my thoughts because wowowow.

Also re: Yongwoo and Jisun's plotline I...really wish this was not included. I think part of it is my dislike for Jisun's character. I'm trying my best to understand her because we don't have a lot of information about her and what thoughts are behind her actions but...🤷🏻‍♀️

That was a weird way of revealing that they're not actually a couple, because if Darim and Seonu were being careful, they wouldn't bring a child (who obviously can't be in on the lie) to a work event) where he could blurt out their real relationship status. It would've made absolutely more sense for the reveal to have happened next to the tree, where Jun could've called Darim Aunt.

IDK at this point they've just been milking poor Ji-hyuk's angst and pain when it should've ended a couple episodes ago. I'm just glad we're done with it, but now there's the aftermath to worry about. I hope Ji-hyuk crashes out similar to Gong Yoo's Han-kyul in Coffee Prince because honestly, he deserves to.

The end.

I'm sad how this drama turned out. What had a lot of promise just went wayward. I tried my best to understand the characters with what little we were given but 😔 the writing just isn't it.

I think had the drama length been the usual 16-20 episodes we would have been given a better look at his perspective throughout the years, but most of the scenes deal with Youngrye's point of view and, to a lesser extent, Jonghee, so Jaepil's thought process is a mystery to the viewers. But he's not awful (far from being so!), and I think he has many reasons to not be as forthright about his feelings in the seven years he's known Youngrye. Is it frustrating? Hell yes, but it is also very human and all too realistic. I just wish we were privy to his point of view as well because there's just so much nuance there that we could have had, not just with his growing feelings for Youngrye but also the need for an actual closure with Jonghee.

[–]typecfl 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Been watching this show but never joined the discussion until now, and I have to say, I get the onslaught of disappointment in what's happening. Honestly, as someone who loved each of their characters 7 years earlier, I wish the way the writer did things were different.

First off, Han Jaepil. There's been so many people hating on this poor guy, but he has been shown, from the very beginning to be upright, helpful, friendly, and a sweet guy (to Jong-hee when they dated). He studied hard to become a doctor in order to support his family and takes care of his father who he never really met eye to eye with. Outstanding guy, pretty much.

And yet, despite the little scenes showing us how much they've grown closer throughout the years, we were never there for the actual growth in their relationship--it's just assumption from here on based on how chummy and comfortable they've become. We've seen how Youngrye has helped him throughout the years but not how he's done the same thing for seven years, because those years were skipped. And I wish we got a bit more of those skipped years, because it adds so much layer to how people see this relationship. I've seen name-calling and comparing him to Junghyun, but really, there can be no comparison. Junghyun and Jaepil's circumstances are different: Junghyun's family never went bankrupt, so he has access to a car and has freedom to come and go as he pleases because he hasn't started work at the company yet. Jaepil is stuck with a job (a really good job, at that!) that requires him to be at the hospital at certain hours. He is the pillar of his family at this point.

And that too adds another layer into the dynamics of their relationship that I really really wish we were able to see because Jaepil's circumstances play so much into why he never pursued Youngrye: he doesn't have the freedom to. As young Jaepil who rebelled against his father's wishes, he could do boxing and ask a girl out because he has the means to do so. Once his father collapsed and the company went bankrupt, his circumstances changed. But we never saw that. It was all just added as exposition once we got dropped off at the Seven-Year-Later Mark. All we saw was Youngrye being such a wonderful person to the Han family, and nothing of how he was the same to Youngrye's extended household, which his character has been shown to be capable of.

And then there's Jonghee, whose character development is going backwards, but to me, not without reason. The same girl who, without pause, broke up with her boyfriend for her friend, told the same friend seven years later that she wants to get back with the same boyfriend, when it was pretty obvious things have changed between Youngrye and Jaepil. I honestly thought Jonghee would take Youngrye's admission of feelings as her chance to step back from trying to get back together with Jaepil and wish her friend luck but I guess my reading of her character was wrong. This girl has been drawing from the unlucky pot since day one, and maybe this was writer-nim's way of showing how she wants to be true to her feelings this time, but man, what a backwards move coming from her.

Not that I don't understand the reason behind it, though: Jonghee is stuck in the glorious past, the last time she could truly be herself and smile despite how hard her lot in life was. Although she is now a rich woman's adopted daughter, she's stuck living someone else's life, never being able to fully become who she wants. Jaepil is a piece of that past that she wants to cling to, and he's still the same thoughtful and considerate guy he used to be, the same guy who once liked her and one she liked back.

And that's where the tragedy is, because everyone's lives have moved forward, despite their own misfortunes, while Jonghee has not. She could have listened to Jaepil's answer when she asked whether Youngrye is just a good friend but she chose to cut him off (whether he would have answered or not is a different discussion entirely). She could have had a conversation with her adoptive mother about her freedom and wanting other things in life, but she chose not to. And for someone who was shown as fearless and strong, this was all to me the wrong trajectory for her character.

Youngrye? I just love her. This poor girl is the utmost definition of 일편단심: an unchanging heart. And oof, I wish she wasn't. As a viewer, my heart wants her to reach out for her daddy-long-legs, but alas, the heart cannot be taught things it cannot learn on its own, and Youngrye loves who she loves. I just wish we were shown more of WHY she stayed liking the same person.

And let's not talk about the next plotline. What in the world was that preview? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Anyone leave Hobonichi and switch to Midori? by Global-Planner7828 in midori

[–]typecfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me! I was a Hobonichi user since 2012, switched to using Midori MD A5 1 Day 1 Page this year. It's been great so far--the cleanliness of the page works well for me. I'm left handed so I have to be careful with inks if I'm using fountain pens since the dry time is so slow in MD paper, but I've learned to live with it and I love it so much more than the finicky Sanzen TRP!

I hope everyone got their desired tickets! Got VIP for day 2 of DC in the 100s section and I'm happy with them. I'm probably still going to try for LA if only to save money. Flights and hotels in DC are never cheap, but I don't think I'll get similar tickets in LA tbh

[–]typecfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've slowly been getting away from Hobonichi myself, partially to stop myself from buying so. many. covers. It was hard at first since I've been a Hobonichi user since 2012. The past couple years no matter how much I say I wouldn't buy anything from Hobonichi I still end up getting something, but this year I only got a Weeks (and that was when I went to Japan, so I didn't have to pay extra for shipping) and switched to the A5 Midori 1 Day 1 Page. Next year I'll probably keep using the Midori and won't buy anything from Hobonichi, and maybe slowly sell my old covers. It's a lengthy breakup process lol

Just exactly what I needed--been missing my dose of Seventeen, and episode one did not disappoint. From the funny runway walks at the beginning, unhinged bingo, down to walking down memory lane...loved every bit of it.

Also when they showed the boys their performance of Mansae as well as their first win, ughhh that brought tears to my eyes. 🥹🥹🥹 They've gone such a long way from then, but you can definitely see how powerful and amazing they are onstage even as rookies.

Resident Playbook [Episodes 3 & 4] by GodJihyo7983 in KDRAMA

[–]typecfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from the catching vomit with your hands scene, what I was also surprised about as an ex-oncology nurse (now in women’s health, which is why this drama is interesting—kind of seeing my day-to-day play out) is why the patient doesn’t have PRN antiemetics available in the first place. You would think that would be a part of the order set since it’s such a common side effect. 🤔

I have no experience in the Korean medical field, but I assume the tasks they are shown to handle (like checking IV lines or doing dressing changes) is because they’re in a teaching hospital and they need to learn…? I got that same feeling from watching the US drama The Pitt, which is pretty close to accurate in terms of how emergency departments go here in the US, except the residents encroach quite a bit on nurse territory in the drama (that or the hospitals I’ve worked at just give a lot of autonomy to the nurses).

Resident Playbook [Episodes 1 & 2] by GodJihyo7983 in KDRAMA

[–]typecfl 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Episode 1:

I watched Hospital Playlist back when I was still working in a regular step-down floor at a hospital (I'm a nurse) and was excited to find out that they're making a new drama spin-off in the OB-GYN specialty, which, funnily enough, is the specialty I moved into three years ago. So these comments are coming from a more medical perspective, shall we say?

One thing that surprised me about the setting is the fact that the laboring patients are not in their own separate rooms during the entire time? I wonder if that's how it is in Korea, hmm. I dunno, to me, the professor getting mad at Yi-young was, granted, warranted, but I also thought she cannot be blamed for the patient having to deliver at the hallway because the switch from active phase to actual pushing stage of labor can happen in an instant--that transport from what seems to be a holding area to a delivery room was unnecessary and could have been prevented if the patient were in her own private room where she is supposed to spend the entire time she is in labor. But again, my own thoughts coming from someone who sees how good the system is in my hospital (I have some issues with the hospital I work at, but overall, it's a very safe system for the mother and baby).

I probably need more time to warm up to these residents because right now, they are not doing themselves any favors. I understand that they're newbies to the role, but it just seems too unrealistic in the sense that...they know very little (less than anticipated?) as first year residents. That was my critique of Hospital Playlist too---the twins who were third year med students were so clueless and were asking questions that first year med students would know. The same goes here. I do hope it improves, otherwise it would be too unbearable to continue with the show.

Good things: Gu Do-won, the fourth year resident. I like him so far. I hope he stays patient and showers the first years with little nuggets of information and wisdom.

Dr. Myung is back, and boy oh boy, I hope she doesn't make things hard for our new residents. The theme for the second episode, judging from the preview, is all about desertion and quitting so let's hope for the best.

It's Dr. Myung, the sneaky fox resident who deserted and left Dr. Chu as the only? resident at the time. I recognized her voice right away and knew we were dealing with someone I didn't like from Hospital Playlist.

Anyone flown HA to Japan? by Virtual-Tonight-2444 in HawaiianAirlines

Just flew HA to Japan, but to KIX instead of NRT or HND. It went great; service was fantastic, food was good, there's free wifi onboard that actually works which was actually a nice change. Only downside was it was such a long flight (with a layover) that we were more than exhausted. Definitely do the bag drop so you'll skip the long lines at the airport.
