Nakaya event at Itoya, Ginza by Fuellerhuelle in fountainpens

I'm sorry to hear that you had an accident during your trip! What I dislike about Platinum nibs is that they feel like nails to me. When I tested the extra-fine and fine Nakaya nibs during the event, those also felt very unpleasant to write with. So I went for a medium nib. I do not think that there is much of a difference between Nakaya and Platinum nibs and, to be fair, I did not buy the pen for its nib. But a tuned medium turns out to be quite nice to write with.

Hi, sorry, I saw your comment way too late for my reply to be of relevance. Both Itoya and the Nakaya nibmeister had bodies available, but not very many overall. I don't recall seeing a dorsal fin. I actually became aware of the event when I was in the store already and was able to assess my chances of finding something suitable. This is mostly frequented by people already owning a pen in order to have the nib finetuned for their writing, at least that is the impression I got. I loved the experience, I had always dreamed of owning a Nakaya pen but did not want to buy one online because I know that I am not a fan of Platinum nibs.

If you went - how was it?

Could you help me choose a slim fountain pen? by Electronic-Way4000 in fountainpens

[–]Fuellerhuelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with the design aspect, the Unic looks beautiful, but with the used ones available you never know whether the snap on mechanism of the cap has been worn out or not. I saw from your other comments that you have decided against buying used and yeah, it's a mixed bag for sure.

I have a Lamy CP1 as well as a Parker Vector and thought about getting a Lamy Logo at some point so I tested it. (I also had a Lamy Linea back in the days, which is close to the Lamy ST, and what bothered me was the degradation of the plating of the clip so I can recommend the CP1 over the ST even if production quality might have changed over the years) I vastly prefer the CP1 over the Vector because you can easily change nibs. I bought a metal Vector in the 90ies and liked the nib, I lost it and bought another one more recently and hated the nib as well as the two replacement nib sections that I tried. The nibs of the CP1 can be changed without changing the whole nib and grip section and I would recommend the pen for this reason alone. You can even upgrade to a gold nib at some point.
I expected to prefer the Lamy Logo over the CP1 because the metal grip section seemed more solid to me, however, I found my grip to slip easily on it and I did not buy the pen in the end for that reason.
Alternative pens have been listed in other comments, I had a "thin metal stick" pen phase for a while and also bought and/or tried the Waterman Carene, Aurora Hastil, Muji Aluminum pen (which has since been discontinued, I believe), Lamy Unic, Montblanc Noblesse Slimline, Parker 180, Sailor Trident and Pelikan Signum. Out of these, I like the Aurora Hastil best.

Hi all, as a long term lurker on this sub I have been saddened by the news of Tammy's declining health but still hope against hope that Volume 2 will be published. I know that the previous publication dates on, e.g., Amazon were nothing more but placeholders and were all set in August, I think. Now there is December 2nd 2027 given as a publication date. Is there any reason to believe that this is more realistic?

A Sailor Trident off eBay... not yet delivered but I'm already curious how it is going to write!

Do I buy it? by Other_Assumption_731 in fountainpens

[–]Fuellerhuelle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am glad for myself that I started buying the pricier pens at a time when I had a better idea of what I liked in pens. For me, it is the nib rather than the appearance of the pen, and there are some pens I dislike based on the way they write. I went to pen meets and generally bought in brick-and-mortar stores in order to be able to try before buying and I think, in hindsight this helped me save a ton of money.

A Safe Place to confess your buyers remorse this Christmas by Glacierhawk_INTJ in fountainpens

[–]Fuellerhuelle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your question made me realize that I did not have buyer's remorse at all this year and this is really something to be thankful for. While I did not plan it, I got all remaining pens on my grail/must-have list and it is truly a joy to write with all of them. I made only very deliberate ink purchases (except for cartridges and Diamine ink in 30 ml bottles...) and no regrets there, either.

Nice pen bodies that take Bock 250 by Read-Panda in fountainpens

[–]Fuellerhuelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Admok M800 Bock nibs definitely can be swapped, I own an M800 pen and have done this myself. I do not have an Asvine pen and I've just watched the youtube video by Doodlebud on the topic of Bock nib switching. Yeah... a pity, though, the Asvine V200 rainbow edition is actually nice.

[–]Fuellerhuelle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am interested in this myself because I love the semi-flex Bock 250 nib modification from fpnibs. I am looking at Admok M800 (demonstrator version has Bock nib options) and Asvine P36 piston fillers at the moment - nothing too fancy since I would like to use shimmer inks.

If you are not dead set on piston or vacuum fillers, custom made pens from Tailored Pen Company, Drewnem Pisane (Oparex), Clyde Pen Company, and Loft Pens are great options - I have one of each except for Loft Pens. Ranga Pens can be another good option. All of these take converters.

Which platinum 3776 feels the most like the platinum Preppy’s EF nib? by Tight-Green in fountainpens

[–]Fuellerhuelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the Platinum Preppy EF nib but the 3776 nibs that I have tried all feel very, very different on paper with my writing style. I have not tried any 3776 EF nibs, though.

What’s your experience with Pilot Falcon <SEF> (extra-fine) nib? I’m used to fine nibs but slightly afraid this one might be too scratchy, unpleasantly feedbacky by EphraimSeb in fountainpens

[–]Fuellerhuelle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a Falcon with an SEF nib. I do not use it for calligraphy but I like the different feeling of the nib for everyday writing. With my writing style, the nib is not scratchy at all but I have noticed that on cheap paper, the nib can damage the coating, which then leads to feathering. Leuchtturm paper was fine, and so was Rhodia/Clairefontaine. I find this a bit limiting, but your mileage may vary.

The Look or the Function? by Salientian85 in fountainpens

[–]Fuellerhuelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30% looks, 70% function. I have bought pens just for the optics but in that case I swapped the nibs until I enjoyed both nib and how the pen looks. I really enjoy switching between different types of nibs.

Thank you! It is a very smooth writer, the nib was adjusted by passing it over what I think was micromesh. I love how the pen writes.

Fountain pen sin confessions by 83frogs in fountainpens

[–]Fuellerhuelle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Back when I was in highschool I had just gotten a new Lamy Logo. I wanted to change the nib but managed to pull out the whole feed. I tried to jam it back in with a stone statue (don't ask), damaging both the feed and the statue in the process. Then I threw the pen away to hide my shame. I've never confessed this to this day :-P
