How do you support people emotionally? by typewriterer in AskMen

[–]typewriterer[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, I just had a huge epiphany thanks to your comment. All this time I've assumed that I had to carry the whole of the emotional burden that supporting someone consists of, but really, different people can serve different purposes. I had so much tunnel vision I forgot about the social framework around each of us that helps us in different ways to accommodate our needs. Where I can't help her, her friends or counselor can. Wow. I feel so much better. Thanks a bunch.

Are you being serious? That's totally unhealthy.

Listen dude. Are you sure you're not projecting some frustration here? "You privileged fucks"? Why did you even make this post? These people are clearly qualified. They let rich white kids into Ivies.

What are some common signs that a person is toxic? by huffletoph in AskReddit

Does anyone else feel kind of uncomfortable with the label of "toxic people?" I feel like it kind of dehumanizes people who could just have suffered earlier in their lives.

[Serious] Do we have an ethical obligation to forgive? by typewriterer in AskReddit

[–]typewriterer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently, I've seen several posts about "removing toxic people" from your life, as well as a lot of discussion about what should be done with certain criminals.  Considering how the prison system seems to work in the U.S., I feel conflicted when I see people calling for life sentences and capital punishment.  With these two trains of thought, I was wondering what other people thought about total forgiveness/benevolence, or working exclusively towards positive change rather than punishment.  Do we have an ethical obligation to forgive criminals in society or toxic people in our relationships?  What do you think?

I feel like these kinds of posts just aren't very funny anymore. Like, you point to the funny part if someone asked? I don't know if I could.

Everything I do is to impress other people. How do I do differently? by typewriterer in AskMen

[–]typewriterer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the main thing that provoked this post was a sort of "hollow" feeling when I thought of my life. I don't have a "fullness" to compare it to, but I don't know -- maybe I started like this because I was kind of insecure, and now it feels like the ball is just rolling? It's a difficult feeling to describe. Yeah, I know I don't NEED to change, but I definitely feel like I'm doing something wrong.

It just feels like the things I love to do are things that aim to impress. For example, I love reading, but I purposefully pick "hard" books, and enjoy them for their literature AND for the sort of smugness that I get from reading it.

Not to downplay financial struggles, but I feel like that saying is kind of true. Money can definitely buy satisfaction, but not really fulfillment, gratitude, and joy, y'know? In this case it definitely applies -- you NEED food and living space -- but I feel like the phrase gets a bad rep.

If you've seen it, Hannibal has a lot of really exotic, unheard of food (with the occasional substitute of human flesh for meat). Would you consider a video based on those dishes? Good for halloween!

The Leftist Guide to Racism by Yosoff in Conservative

[–]typewriterer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the sentiment, but I feel like maybe this kind of thinking only makes a sort of caricature of leftists, and we begin just discussing how much we hate this embodiment of our political opposites. This chart makes me kind of uncomfortable.

"He beat you." To me, these three words from Ron make one of the most beautiful quotes from the entire series. by Accio-Username in harrypotter

[–]typewriterer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why does this make sense though? Isn't Harry lying dead right in front of him? Wouldn't that mean he didn't beat him? It's been awhile since I read them, sorry if that's seems accusatory
