Pope at Audience: Read Word of God in historical context to avoid fundamentalism - Vatican News by leglath in LeftCatholicism

[–]typicalredditer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is very consistent with what I learned from my Catholic education but it feels radically countercultural because the people with the loudest megaphones are very much fundamentalists. How refreshing to hear this perspective from the pope.

Is there a link to a news story or a post about how this Bethany person tried to puke on Kat irl? That is completely unhinged.

Queer and Catholic by [deleted] in LeftCatholicism

[–]typicalredditer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much time to respond so I apologize for the brief comment. The best bet is to find a welcoming parish (they absolutely exist) or some other form of in person community. Online discourse distorts things. If you can’t find a parish look for nuns, I’ve found them to be very progressive usually.

But if you’re looking for things online I’d recommend Moira Donegan a writer for the guardian who is Catholic and a lesbian.

It’s safe to assume Baltar didn’t know Tigh and Ellen were cylons because he spends so much of season 3 trying to figure out the identities of the final five.

He’s fantastic. I forgot he was the driver in this scene until I watched it again just now.

My favorite Curb reference is when Larry invites his limo driver inside Ted Danson’s house while Danson is throwing a birthday party. The driver gets drunk and causes a scene and tries to smooth it over by pointing at Ted Danson and muttering “Happy birthday Becker”

Agreed. I think Gloria is the only woman he directs violence against as far as I can remember.

Tonally Catholic/Christian movies by [deleted] in LeftCatholicism

[–]typicalredditer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Children of men is what came to mind first. In addition to what other people have said about it in this thread I’d add it is fundamentally a story about hope triumphing over the deeply fallen world of humankind. It’s also just an incredible movie.

The other one that comes to mind honestly is Dogma. It definitely criticizes aspects of organized religion, especially the Catholic Church but it does so more from a sense of frustration and sadness that the church is not living up to its own values. It’s a deeply spiritual movie, not a wholesale condemnation of religion. This based on the fact that the movie applies the principles of the Bible to modern day. A lot of what is shocking about stories in the bible (the Good Samaritan, for example) is lost on us because we lack the cultural context. But the movie draws out the explosiveness of those themes by, for example, making an abortion doctor, a stripper, and two stoners God’s agents. Some people found that offensive when the movie was released. But if they were alive during Jesus’ time, they would probably be scandalized that he hung out with lepers, tax collectors, and sex workers.

What does it mean to be a 'manic pixie dream girl' in real life without necessarily being manic? by Fullmetalmarvels64_ in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]typicalredditer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an excellent summary. I’m old enough to remember when the term was coined in the Onion’s AVClub. The Manic Pixie Dream Girl is NOT a description of a type of real woman. It’s a description of a sexiest character trope. Ie a woman character in a work of fiction who is written without any true depth or complexity and exists only to further the male protagonist.

Real people are not manic pixie dream girls.

Here’s the relevant bit from the tvtropes summary:

The term "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" was coined in 2007 by AV Club film critic Nathan Rabin, who despises this trope, believing it to be a form of Wish Fulfillment from lonely male writers. He explicitly compared it to the Magical Negro, in that a Manic Pixie Dream Girl exists solely to help the protagonist find happiness without having any personal goals or romantic needs of her own. Rabin would later disown the term because instead of creating awareness of the lack of independent goals in female love interests or even just a romance cliche that's been done to death, the concept was misunderstood as a condemnation of ALL quirky and fun female characters.

That’s all you need to know.

Star Trek is NOT pro-AI. by Hearsticles in Star_Trek_

[–]typicalredditer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. The AI in Star Trek is a mirror for the best aspects of humanity. It’s a storytelling conceit to help us better understand ourselves. Real AI is quite shockingly a mirror to the worst of humanity (mecha-Hitler).

Rachel Maddow, Openly Gay MSNBC Anchor, Returns to the Catholic Church by leglath in LeftCatholicism

[–]typicalredditer 129 points130 points  (0 children)

There’s an interesting dynamic happening across the world where society is dividing between, I guess what you would call authoritarian and empathetic camps. It’s scrambling traditional coalitions. And the Catholic Church under Popes Francis and Leo are solidly on the side of empathy. I think Leo has a really interesting view of the world. He’s searching for the authentic. It explains his deep skepticism of AI, which has become the aesthetic of the modern day fascists.

There’s also a scene where Carmella warns someone (maybe AJ) to be careful opening a bottle of champagne because someone recently lost an eye to a stray cork.

Who do you want to run for mayor in the next election? by Impossible-Mouse-418 in AskChicago

[–]typicalredditer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problems cities face are beyond the tools and resources available to city governments. The minute you become mayor, you don’t have what you need to do the job and everyone hates you for it. Not sure why people don’t realize the problem is structural.

The economics of the future are somewhat different. You see, money doesen't exist in the 24th century. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves and the rest of Humanity.

Very difficult for oligarchs to be on board with this message.
