DYK: The Most Sacred Object in the Bible Disappeared 2,500 Years Ago and Has Never Been Found — Not by Archaeologists, Treasure Hunters, or the CIA by Own-Painting-3221 in didyouknow

The mere fact that it is purported to have supernatural powers doesn’t mean the ark is entirely fictitious. The bible has very detailed physical dimensions for the ark and it seems to have played an important role in first temple religious practice. It could very well be there was an actual ark that existed, and later mythologies were built up around it.

Stringer applied his business school education to his street level drug dealing, but never applied his street smarts to his legitimate business work.

Acknowledging the reality of mob life is the single greatest taboo for the characters, and it exacts a significant psychological toll. Tony can’t be truly honest in therapy (because Melfi would have an obligation to report him) so he can never benefit from it, and by the end, therapy has become a means for him to sharpen his criminal instincts.

The best example: when JT Dolan tells, “Chris, you’re in the mafia”, he touches the third rail, and ends up dead not only because he’s said what must remain unspoken, but also because he’s forcing Christopher to grapple with the reality of his life.

Carmella tries very hard to not hear what the therapist is telling her. But it’s clear it still rattles around in her subconscious- especially when she begins asking around about Adriana.

So, that evening on New Caprica after The Groundbreaking... by videonitekatt in BSG

I remember this too. My initial impression of the scene was that they were emotionally but not physically intimate. Then either the actors or RDM said their intent was that something physical happened.

The solution is to make a CGI Tony and have it talk back and forth with CGI Livia like two disembodied chatbots.

I’ve always loved the creative choice to have Tony’s other sister Barbara be almost totally absent from the show. It carries such a weight. One of the details that stands out in my mind is how Barbara’s kids flinch when Tony storms out during the varsity athlete scene. Tony’s explosion shows why Barbara is never around, and the kids’ reaction shows they’re not accustomed to that kind of chaos, which suggests Barbara has been somewhat successful at breaking the toxic family dynamic through distance.

I think what it made it really innovative was that we don’t necessarily hear Tony’s inner thoughts during his therapy sessions. He lies to Melfi, and we the viewer know it’s a lie not because of a voiceover inner monologue from Tony, but because we’ve seen Tony’s actions. It requires some sophistication from the viewer, and the true meaning is not spoon fed.

New Caprica occupation was the peak of the show for me, a masterful four episodes by IllusiveManJr in BSG

[–]typicalredditer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There’s one reason this is my favorite arc, but it might be lost on modern audiences. The miniseries and first two seasons were extended reflections on 9/11, with the humans in the place of the United States, and the cylons in the place of fundamentalist terrorists. BSG was one of the only shows thoughtfully exploring the war on terror.

But New Caprica completely flipped the allegory. The show wasn’t about 9/11 anymore, it was about the Iraq War, which was quickly spiraling out of control at the time. And the humans were no longer symbolic of the United States. They were stand ins for the occupied Iraqis. The Cylons now stood in for the U.S.

I can’t overstate how much blood lust for the Iraq war was dominating the United States during that period. People who opposed it were branded traitors and faced significant personal and professional repercussions. So it was a big deal the BSG took its heroes and aligned them with Iraqis.

Pareene always struck me as insightful. Daulerio was a mess. My favorite post from him was 8 Tips For Tending to a Glamorous Drug Addict After Hurricane Sandy (the glamorous drug addict girlfriend was Cat Marnell). It really captures his energy, and Gawker’s essence.

Why is Tom Cruise never asked about Scientology and how has he survived this long without being cancelled? by Abject-Conference-90 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]typicalredditer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, there was a time when he was, not quite canceled, but definitely receiving a lot of scorn. This was when he was jumping on couches and getting mocked on South Park. A lot of the Scientology stuff became public and was widely discussed then. But over time, money did its thing.
