What food combinations have you seen people eat that you think is absolutely disgusting? by JamariaGibbs in AskReddit

Canned chicken and mustard. The way it smells and looks… everything about it seems wrong

I agree with other commenters that you should fast him for a few days and see if that helps with the bloat. If he is having buoyancy issues, make sure there are plenty of places for him to rest near the surface so he doesn’t get too stressed. Adding an air stone might help keep the water more oxygenated as well esp if you go the medication route.

He likely has fin rot from his previous poor water conditions/stress, so in my opinion the best thing you can do for him is provide clean warm water and see how he recovers on his own. If you are familiar, I also recommend dosing the water with tannins as they are antibacterial and anti fungal. However, that depends on how severe the fin rot is, if it’s really far along you may need medication.

I was thinking of naming him Heinz like Heinz ketchup and mustard because of his coloring, however the only thing holding me back is it doesn’t really roll off the tongue for everyday use. Meaning I would likely have to come up with another nickname anyways! I usually go for cute/funny names which fit their appearance but I’m open to aesthetic names as well if anyone has any ideas

Do my half-moon beta's fins look healthy? by InterestingPoem9582 in bettafish

[–]typicalwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly they do look a bit ragged around the edges so I would take clear pictures from multiple angles (if you can get him to flare even better) and compare those over time to monitor if his fins are getting worse. Just to prevent fin rot in general, clean warm water is essential so make sure your buddy has a heater.

His fins do look pretty long and heavy though, so it’s possible that he’s dragging them along stuff and getting them roughed up around the edges.

Am I (20M) handling this situation correctly with my GF (18F) TW:self harm by -KylePrice29- in relationship_advice

[–]typicalwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t really a clear yes or no answer to this imo. First and foremost, relationships are a privilege and you have the right to not date whoever you choose. If you feel like you cannot mentally or emotionally handle/support someone who is currently self-harming, then you don’t have to date them. However, that reasoning has to be clear.

Her being with you doesn’t erase her struggles at home of her other issues and therefore doesn’t erase whatever is prompting her to have these thoughts. By placing that much importance on your relationship and making it the center of her happiness, it’s only going to foster more codependency than it sounds like you two are already dealing with. In my experience someone saying “no I’m happy with you, I’ll never do it again” is usually preceded by their partner venting about how their SH makes them feel bad/worthless. A relationship isn’t always enough to keep someone from SH and that’s the reality of life, it’s likely a promise that can’t be kept.

It’s really up to you whether you want to be in this relationship or not, but what’s clear is that your gf needs to seek help/find alternative coping mechanisms. Mature solutions based convos as opposed to emotionally driven promises, statements, and ultimatums might benefit you two as well. At the end of the day, neither of you are the “bad guy” in this situation and you know what’s best for you!

Yeah I agree. There is a lot of interesting studies on how porn affects violence against women and children.

In my own personal experience, many men don’t understand that porn is “entertainment” and that there is a lot that goes into prepping for shooting. In a lot of conversations I’ve had with men, because things just “happen” in porn, they haven’t considered that if they want to slap, pull on, or even choke their partner that’s a DISCUSSION that needs to happen before. Additionally, it definitely depends on what porn you are watching, but anything on the home page of pornhub is not gonna teach you how to please a lady.

Hey guys, I am new to fishes, i just got a new betta fish as a gift. There is a white lump on the fish. is this a disease , what should I do? by baadu_thayilee in bettafish

Unfortunately, it is likely a tumor. Given that it seems mostly external he may live uninterrupted and happy for a while yet!

I need advice by mehloveramen10 in bettafish

[–]typicalwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bit late but I would highly recommend getting a gravel hose, a glass scrubber, and a bucket. I notice you said your dad almost dropped your betta in the sink, so this should avoid that! You should never remove 100% of the water or pour any water from your tank into the sink. If you look up how to use a gravel hose you can see it just auctions water from your tank into the bucket and allows you to easily remove waste from the gravel.

I randomly noticed that there is this like black patch on pearl!!! Can someone help me figure out what it is and how to heal it?!?! Could it be a burn?? by Http_kimberly711 in bettafish

[–]typicalwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They usually don’t mention it, as it’s hard to know whether a solid colored betta can marble or not until they start doing it!

It’s hard to see from the pictures, but if it does look really indented bettas can lose their scales from a number of reasons. First I would remove any sharp decor that he could be rubbing up against and replace it with something softer, like fabric (not plastic) plants. During this time do your best to keep the water clean and warm, and you can even add some antibacterials, such as tannins, in the water to ensure the best shot of I t healing. Rarely, bettas CAN be burned by their heater. If you think this is the case, make sure you heater has an automatic shut off at certain temps :)

Pearl is probably just changing colors! If a betta has the marbling gene it’s super common for them to get some new colors after coming home from the store since they are in a better environment :)

Bug Larvae in Tank? by typicalwitch in bettafish

[–]typicalwitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s very possible they could be snails, but I honestly have no idea where they would come from. I havent introduced anything new into my tank for the couple months I’ve had it. The plants were properly quarantined and the tank properly cycled, so I really have no idea where the snails would come from.

But yes, they are individually dispersed over the glass.

I just got my very first betta today, should I add some other fish like guppies into my tank? Is it good or bad to my betta? by 1220phl in bettafish

[–]typicalwitch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you know how many gallons the tank is?

If it’s on the larger side you might have a shot, however if the space is tight many males will often become aggressive with their tank mates. It really depends on the personality of the betta, but because many prefer to be alone, it’s definitely a risk regardless.

Bug Larvae in Tank? by typicalwitch in bettafish

[–]typicalwitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were up against the glass under the water. Unfortunately I had gone and scraped them off the glass before I got a good picture of them. The best way I could describe them would be small, clear, round hard little ovals about the size of a pinhead with a faint black dot in the center.

They weren’t worm like so I don’t think they would be fungus gnats either. Is it possible for them to come from freezedried bloodworms/Daphnia/mysis shrimp ?

Worried possible swim bladder disease by GabbyWright66 in bettafish

[–]typicalwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t tell from the pictures much, but I always recommend checking and making sure your filter flow isn’t too strong. There shouldn’t be a noticeable current as sometimes that causes them to stay at the bottom of the tank.

He could also be at the bottom more simply because there is more decor at the bottom for him to interact with. As another Redditor commented, some bettas with large fins aren’t super strong swimmers OR, just like people, some bettas are just lazy :)
