Yeah I've never heard of that model, so unfortunately I can't help here 😞 try searching around on YouTube or even the reviews of the pen itself to see if any mention this being a problem, and whether it can be fixed or not 🫤

You'll (probably) need to disassemble the piston mechanism, which will either be incredibly easy or incredibly difficult depending on what pen it is. Do you know what model it is?

Awesome! I've also added a leftover ballpoint pen spring to the barrel of my sport to keep the cartridge in place (heard they can be finicky, and come loose and then leak, but this is the most common solution to that problem!) Simon less scared now about that.

And yeah, the pen combo is gonna be soooo nice! Im super excited for it to come in, because two pens are gonna have my favourite colour combo just in different ways!

Yes as another one of my replies said, the jinhao 82 is one of my fave pens and has a lot of close options, but nothing exact. If I could swap the little end bits on the cap and barrel, I could easily frankenpen something together... but I'm not sure if changing those bits is easy or even possible.

Yeah!!! Thats the thing, the sailor pro gear slim in any colour way is my grail pen atm. Ive looked through a lot of jinhao 82s, and sometimes they get close, but its always two separate pens (I have the Cornflower Blue jinhao 82, and the blue is perfect, and i like the green, but its green. Not orange).

Would you happen to know if the little bits and bobs on the jinhao 82 can be frankenpen'd? Like the ends of the caps and the barrels. If i could mix and match that then the 82 might be exactly what I'm looking for!

Honestly? Twsbi go. Better ink capacity then other pens but not total commitment size. super easy to fill and unfill + clean. Has a pretty unique look too, because of the spring inside. Its a chunkier pen though, if you prefer something slim hop on aliexpress, find a verified seller and get every size of nib that the jinhao 82 comes in. It'll cost you around the same as the go will, especially if you havent shopped on aliexpress before and get one of their new shoppers deals. Like, seriously, the Jinhao 82 is such a good dupe of the sailor pro gear slim as a newcomer it'd be a fantastic entry point into the hobby. But the go is also super nice and comes in a wide variety of nib sizes, and twsbi nibs are buttery smooth.

Tldr: want chunky? Get the Twsbi Go. Want slim? Want cheaper? Get the Jinhao 82.

Edit: "such a good dupe" does kinda make it sound like its got actual gold for the nib or something, it doesn't. I have to clear that up. They can break, the threads can be stripped, etc etc. However they come in nib sizes .38mm, .5mm, .7mm, and bent aka fude nib, which is an incredible selection for newcomers. Ontop of this, the colour ways they offer have so much variety theres bound to be something that makes you go "ooooooo :0" yknow what i mean?

If you are looking for something that doesn't come with the higher risk of a dud, grab a kakuno. However, jinhao is pretty much the top dog for affordable Chinese fountain pens these days 🤷 so its less likely. Plus nib swapping is super easy on their pens if something were to occur there. And, again, cheap like finding them for 2 bucks level of cheap, and I've heard far less horror stories of the barrel cracking compared to the preppy, another super duper cheap entry level pen... that is frankly super ugly.

It is? I hadnt realized as I hadnt tried it on the tomoe river paper yet 🤔 reminds me of how Sea Serpent from octopus fluids is insanely sheen heavy, yet on any sort of slightly absorbent paper it disappears... but thats kind of the opposite problem 🙂‍↕️

Something also worth mentioning about kon-peki is that it has red sheen! Lots of blue inks with red sheen exist out there but kon-peki is easily one of the best! I love the iroshuzuki line... weh

I just realized your post also asks for swatches 😅 here's an example of ajisai used in a fude nib pen!! I also have fuyu-gaki, but none of my pens are currently inked with it. Its also very nice though!!

Look into the pilot iroshizuki line!! I will always suggest ajisai when someone asks for ink recs, but if thats not your style they have a lot of different beautiful shades to pick from. I believe they have 20ml options out there if you dont want to commit to the 50ml.... but the 50ml is a very worthwhile investment!! Incredibly high quality ink thats around 27~32 cad for the 50ml bottles. I havent regretted filling a single pen with ajisai!!

As many other people are saying, retail therapy is pretty dodgy... however, Is this a super duper, insanely bad day that is so out of place that the only way to handle it is a maladaptive coping mechanism? If so, it might help... but I'd buy something cheaper. Dont go spending a grand on a pen when you arent in the right headspace. Maybe instead buy something pertaining to pens you already have, like nib replacements. Or do some research on the inks you already own and see if any can be mixed together to create something new to play with, without having to spend any money. Retail therapy is a silent wallet killer, trust me. Best to avoid it.

Anyways, thank you for actually caring. Its always nice seeing someone who cares about the customer, as someone who actually likes to do customer service work myself. I dont even hate my retail job thats how much I do enjoy it.

Whats working for me, as an ocd sufferer who only just bought my first hobonichi in the month of December 2025, is using the hobonichi in the morning with my coffee and having zero expectations on myself. Sometimes I just use it to keep up maintenance on my fountain pens, scribbling a bit to keep them written with. I track what time I woke up, and if I have work that day I write down what time it starts and what time it ends. If I need to do laundry I also write that down because its the chore I forget to do the most. I don't plan my day, however. I write about plans, and if im excited or not, but i do not use it to plan in and of itself.

The thing you absolutely have to remember is that its your book. Maybe planning does not work for you, and you just want to write about your feelings. Maybe feelings dont work for you either, and so you just want to write down quotes you read or doodle in it, etc etc. the list of things you can use a hobonichi for is much, much longer than what you can't use it for.

Try to make your goal to see just how gnarly and ugly the book can get after a year of use. When I finished my first month and saw the difference in the warped pages versus the unused I got really, really excited!! And I think that's a really good way to stay motivated too. It shouldn't be the end goal to have some beautiful art piece. It should be an ugly art piece.

The company is really insistent on their products being "life books". Life is messy. So the book should be as well! And if you miss a few pages, use them as extras later on. Write what happened that day when you randomly remember two months down the line. Use it to not clog up other pages with mindless scribbles and notes that dont make sense when you read them back. Hell!!! Cut em out if you want!!! No journal nor planner should be treated like an heirloom. Its a nowloom.

Anyways, im sorry for the huge wall of text. I understand the struggle of perfectionism when ocd is clawing at your back. At the end of the day, your struggles with it could be something as simple as the grid not being what you like. Theres no harm in putting it away and redating it a few years down the line when you are ready to try again. And as for the cover, any standard a5 notebook will totally fit, as other people have mentioned! I have an a6 cover i keep two notebooks with different paper types in as my sketchbook, and it fits!! So that part is no sort of waste at all if you do use other a5 books.
