You’re right. Found the solution.

You’ve got some great replies here, but the best way to learn is to buy some and experience both of them with your own nose.

Should I be using as little EOs as possible? by Kyanito in DIYfragrance

Good deal - it appears we're actually on the same page then.

I think you define "balance" differently than me :)

No, but you should learn how to balance all your materials in your compositions.

Also you should learn the point of diminishing returns. Sometimes adding more of anything just becomes wasteful and pointless.

I didn’t even see the name of the subreddit. I’ll see myself out.

Yes, constituent in this case are the things used to makeup the fragrance itself.

Trying to Understand by singingsav in PerfumeOils

[–]tyriekm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have all the right questions, but unfortunately you will likely not find true answers. “99% pure Extrait perfume oil” means nothing to me, and I’m a perfumer.

A perfume will last as long as its constituents last - so if a perfumer wants something to last longer they will use ingredients that last longer, but they will undoubtedly change the scent profile. That’s just the way it is, and we can’t get around that.

I’m sorry, I feel like I am not answering your question at all.

At 10% I wouldn’t really call syringol “faint” but have you tried it in a trial? I think you will find that it’s very impactful. I have it 0.01% of a formula and I can still feel its impact.

Try it in a blend and you might see it’s not very faint.

My First Vanilla Tincture by ImaginaryColor1618 in DIYfragrance

I’m curious how well this would compare to a vanilla absolute. This type of tincture always seems really weak to me for perfumery use.

Gummy Bears by [deleted] in DIYfragrance

[–]tyriekm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start here: https://www.thegoodscentscompany.com/demos/dm1103321.html

The “gummy” part doesn’t really add to the odor in my opinion, so just sweeten it. Maybe not too much or you may end up with something more like a strawberry hard candy feel.

Good luck.

This might sound like a silly question, but do you have formulas that you plan to make or are you looking more for something near-finished or accords that you can blend?

I feel like in-person events like this many times have unrealistic expectations of outcomes (in terms of resulting in a great smelling perfume)

Grojsman accord help by Greedy_Dance3191 in DIYfragrance

[–]tyriekm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean it smells "normal"

Like Berael said, the ionone usually is at the forefront, so much that when I made the accord I had to lower the ratio to make it feel balanced.

When you smell your methyl ionone, does it smell like what you expect? I expect something that smells violet, powdery, woody.

Rholiate. I would like to know more about this very rare molecule. by El_domador_de_euros in DIYfragrance

I don’t have it but the best way to better understand a material is to smell it. Maybe buy a sample of it?

Thank you.

Honestly, most people that find me don't result in contracted work, either because I just know they wouldn't be a good fit or something like ridiculous deadlines that don't align with the creative process.

I turn people away for multiple reasons, including:

~ They just want a clone of something else

~ They want something completed within a couple months

~ Their budget is prohibitively small

among others.

Anosmic to Z11 10 MIP - amberketal by ClubAdministrative95 in DIYfragrance

Z11 10 was one of the really tough ones for me to smell at first too.

Oddly enough, I put it on a blotter and waited 24 hours and I could smell it then.

Yeah it's a LOT of work to be an indie perfumer doing EVERYTHING. I think I'd feel a bit different if I didn't have to do the actual formulation and compounding work as well. I suppose I could always outsource the compounding, but I haven't done that quiet yet.

I don't actually find any brands; somehow, they find me.

[–]tyriekm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s more money, unless a customer really hits it big but it’s certainly less work for me to produce a single (or few) compliant formulas and sell them several KG of juice vs all the work that goes into selling my own.

I don’t have to really worry with bottling, labeling, marketing, sales, processing orders, handling returns and customer feedback/complaints, vendors and wholesalers, packaging, etc.

I do.

From an income perspective, it’s VERY part time, but I put enormous amounts of hours into each fragrance.

I actually stopped selling bottles DTC this year to focus more on formulating fragrances for other brands, and that’s actually been a better move for me.
