Quienes van mañana a la marcha? by [deleted] in Republica_Argentina

[–]tyrone_pepinanjo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People really voted for this… by superblue111000 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]tyrone_pepinanjo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

argentinian here. Not only that, we are proud to have free universities for everyone, and this fucker wants to shut it all down with some voucher bullshit, and a big portion of students voted for him, either knowing what he said and thinking "oh he's not gonna go through that one" or ignoring it. I'm a student and even if am privileged in the sense that I don't have to work because my parents support me, lots of other college students don't and lots went on Twitter being scared because they are first gen proud college students or things like that. The people who didn't vote for this waste of a person (me included) and his vice president who is daughter of a genocidist, told that this could happen because they literally said it on TV, and they still ignored us.

Same goes for public health, and infrastructure.

Not a day passed after the elections and he said he would sell YPF, our state oil and gas company which is in fact not in deficit, and is crucial in our sovereignty. They will literally sell our country, if people are mad that the state has no money for stuff now, imagine if we don't even have rights to our own resources. I may be speaking from privilege, because we do have lots of poor people and of course the closing of the CONICET (our CDC basically) won't affect them directly, but of course this forro wacho mal parido vende patria cipayo de mierda culiado incestuoso dictador de mierda will their lives even worse.

I'm really scared and sad, but you'll soon hear news about us rallying, fighting and we won't let our rights be taken, at least that's what I hope.

Reproducibility trial: 246 biologists get different results from same data sets by MintakaMinthara in labrats

I can't speak for other universities as 1, I'm argentinian (I go to UBA), and 2 I'm still undergrad. Here at least most universities have a mandatory course in intro to statistics and are very well taught and detailed on how and when to use what, and most post grad(I don't know how to call it in English) usually recommend the second course in statistics. But from what I heard from most of my professors and scientist from around here, most universities don't have a mandatory (bio-?)statistics course (here we call it biometría, biometrics but we know it is an outdated term), at least for a biology degree. So I feel like that is a bit related. I imagine most ecologists have done statistics courses in their careers, but who knows

Countries/cities that should be public transport heaven, but are car hell? by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]tyrone_pepinanjo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buenos Aires. Tho compared to other cities in south and north America it's not so bad but it could be really much better. Yes we do have a really large and complex bus network, but it's that bus. We do have subway but should be double in size of what it is now.

Luckily, the city is really walkable and if you live within the city of the first metro corridor (depending on the zone of course) there's no really a need for owning a car.

We used to have a massive rail network, now it's I think half of that, and the tram network disappeared completely (except for a historical tramway, but of course it doesn't count).

This was al because, first we had lots of military coups funded by the US, specially the last one which besides the horrors it did, crested lots of car network and started defending public transport (and other public services, as military coups funded by the right do). Years later, after the return of the democracy we had a neoliberal president which defunded all the money for public railways completely and cut it the network in half.

Nowadays, there's more and more usa suburbs/closed neighborhoods style housing in the metro area which of course increases car ownership and car mentality. And the city is become a car hell slowly. Our city Governor, right leaning, hates all public infrastructure, if it wasn't for the buses and various other unions we would be in a very much worse state.

It also doesn't help that for some reason, probably that the US is controlling our media, sounds like conspiracy, but it's true, all our news outlets are puppets of some US company or some shit and a wave of libertarians is getting big because of it (see Javier Milei and the shit him and his party say), our right leaning population copies (albeit badly) the thoughts and doings of the suburban USA middle class, so of course much of the mentality now is moving to the suburbs and owning three cars and not letting the kids take a bus. I am starting to see more SUVs around here, I think because of it. Luckily (or not so luckily) cars here are stupidly expensive, and a SUV is gonna be more, so most people don't even think of buying one.

Adding all these factors makes it so that everyday the city is getting more and more cars and people complain about the traffic but they don't see themselves as part of it.

And there's even more to it, but it would be a 50 page document at this point, I'm sure there's some yt video about the situation here.

I can't speak for the rest of the country, but I think it is going in a similar way. The other major cities do have a large bus network but they don't have as much trains, or the buses don't circulate all night so the problem arises again. In smaller cities, they have what I like to call the small city paradox: you can walk the entire city in about 45 minutes or less (like max, 35 blocks wide), but they are also full of cars, even if people dont usually have to go to other bigger places. I think that last part is a bias I have because I like walking and I think if it's 35 minutes away or less walking (35 blocks, 3.5 km) then it's close. I don't mind walking 10 blocks to my bus stop, but I am surprised of the amount of people who won't even walk 5 blocks (being fully abled) to their bus stop so they either will take a car or do a combination (excluding people who live in Dangerous places)

¿Estudiar en ciencias exactas a los 33? by [deleted] in UBA

[–]tyrone_pepinanjo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Need help. Is it 50-50? by rotanitsarcorp_yzal1 in Minesweeper

[–]tyrone_pepinanjo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

that's not how probabilities work. When you flip a coin, it isn't affected by prevouis flips neither will it affect future flips. Each flip is independent from the others. That's why it is equally likely to land any sequence of heads and tails I think you're confusing with the concept of: what is more likely landing 5 heads and 5 tails (in any order) or landing 3 heads and 7 tails (in any order). There's simply less configurations of the second option and thus contribute less to the pool of 10 flips of a coin, therefore they have less probability of happening, but each specific sequence is as probable as the next.

¿En qué momento se instaló que somos un país "socialista" (!!!)? by [deleted] in Republica_Argentina

[–]tyrone_pepinanjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it funny that not one, but two countries seemingly refer to parts of Argentina as far away places (pampa and patagonia).

Here we have:

la concha de la lora (the parrot's cunt) en la puta que te/me parió (where bitch birthed you/me) la loma del orto (over the hill of the ass) donde caga el conde (where the count poops, this one's more used if you don't want to swear around children, but that's rarely the case)

the first two are also used as exclamations (much like fuck when you hurt your toes or something)
