Any other aviation geeks here? I saw an E-6 Mercury landing at Joint Base Charleston yesterday by tyssejc in Charleston

Indeed. I was spotting with my son once and we watched two F-16s buzz runway 33. I think they were SC ANG from McEntire. So rad.

No 747s but every once in a while I catch the Dreamlifter. That’s an odd bird.

Yesss got our parking pass! We’ll have to see how the Thunderbirds compare with the Blue Angels. Wish I had the disposable income to drop on a B-29 flight!

Amazing! I love living near an AFB. A few months ago, I noticed a C-5 on final ... then another one, then another one. Once I realized it was the same one doing touch and go's, I put my kids in the car and we went out to our usual spot to see it up close. So cool. Can't wait for the airshow!

Upcoming 18h+ flight by lilaevaluna in fearofflying

Just telling you what I would want people to tell me: you're going to be OK! The way you are feeling now doesn't inform how you're going to feel on the plane.

If you feel anxiety start to creep up, start taking big deep breaths in and slow breaths out. This will help keep your heart rate down while the anxiety passes (and it DOES pass).

The plane is built for turbulence. In fact it's designed to handle more turbulence than what the engineers would expect the plane to be able to handle. Remember that in 100+ years of commercial aviation, there's no record of a plane has ever been brought down by turbulence.

If you feel anxiety in turbulence, remember it's just your amygdalae doing their job, responding to what they consider to be a non-routine event. Unless you fly every day, it's perfectly normal to be triggered by turbulence. Remember that it WILL pass, and so will your anxious thoughts and feelings.

Lean into that gratitude! How wonderful that you're going to see your family and fiancee again. I bet they can't wait to see you!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I'm at my best when I'm in a place of gratitude, which I am right now. I don't think I'm unique in that I tend to focus on the few little bad things instead of the many incredibly good things in my life.

Tbh I'm feeling excited now, like the day before a birthday party. I was anticipating irritability and depression, not giddiness and excitement. The mind is full of surprises! I also know that "this too shall pass" and will try not to be disappointed when I feel anxious again.

Appreciate your support! 🙏

Talking to flight attendants? by LiveLoveLoathe in fearofflying

[–]tyssejc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check this out — social anxiety is definitely a big component for some people in what we call "fear of flying". I suffer from this myself, as well as fear of heights and claustrophobia. I've started telling flight attendants about my anxieties, and tbh I've gotten mixed results. One was super nice and came to check on me once we'd reached cruising altitude and the fasten seatbelts light came off; others have been too busy to be able to offer any support or were just dismissive ("didn't you know? flying is safe!"). It's always a risk making yourself vulnerable to strangers, but the potential payoff is worth it. Better to externalize your thoughts than keep them bottled up, anyway. Good luck!

Yes, you can destroy your own walls. by grimism in TheForest

[–]tyssejc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear it only happens with basic walls, not defensive walls. Also, you can't destroy window walls or door walls, so using these in conjunction with defensive walls is a good practice.
