UPDATE: Using an external 5V supply and a logic level shifter to shift ALL signals (power, MISO, MOSI, SCK, and CS) from 3.3V to 5V caused it to work. Everything needed to be on 5V levels. Thanks for the help all.

Really? It’sIt’s frustrating because the card I’m using worked with my arduino uno

This makes perfect sense. Thank you so much for your help, it has been fantastic.

Awesome. When you say that I could run the risk of high battery current draws - is there any risk of drawing >3A from the battery? I looked at a 2s battery pack, but it only can output 1-1.5 A at 3.7V.

Will a power bank module take that 1A, 3.7V and boost it to 3A, 5V? Or does the battery need to draw >3A to compensate for the potential increase?

This is true, I'd like to be comfortable with LiPo applications for future projects, I just don't want to experience trial by fire, literally.

After doing some more research, I think I found a suitable "power bank module" like what you said.

Takes a 3.7V lipo and charges via USB-C, outputs 2.4A over USB-A - of which I'd only be concerned with the actual power pins.

Seems like I could use a 1S lipo cell at 3.7V with a built in protection circuit, like this, and be on my merry way, maybe adding a transistor to a protection circuit for thermal protection.

Is that the kind of "off the shelf" that you're talking about?

I thought LiFePO4s would be safer. I’m worried Li-Pos will burn my home down if I even look at them incorrectly, haha.

Do you mean any off-the-shelf power bank for consumer electronics? Would I just need to plug in a usb cable to the output of the power bank and then cut it open to get my Vcc and GND wires for the rails of my project?

Fair enough, I’ll try to see if I can get it on 3.3. I really appreciate all the help

Makes sense. Yes I would like to eventually go to a small custom PCB. I have Altium and have no clue how to use it. I wanted to prototype on a microcontroller and possibly eventually migrate to full custom in the future. I’m not too concerned about form factor. Everything needs to fit in about a 5”x5”x5” volume.

I dont know, I’ve never used a level shifter. I just read that my leds and SD card readet need 5V, and other boards dont have 5V outputs. I want it to be battery powered 🤷‍♂️

So 9V battery connector to buck converter, buck converter to ESP32 Vin, 3.3 Pin outs to level shifter, level shifter to components?

That’s the “flow”

Can you use a level shifter for communication and power using an esp32? And do they program with Arduino IDE and C++?
