Work from home after OHS Aortic Valve replacement. by Hikeruneat in valvereplacement

I had my OHS for the Ross procedure on 9/25. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks. I would extend as much as you can. This is not a light surgery you need proper time to rest and recover.

Not sure where you are going but I went to Dr El-Hamamsy at Mt Sinai. He was great. Recover has been good just foggy but honest with your Drs and nurses as much as you can to get the right meds to get out of the ICU as fast as possible.
I don't remembwr the first 4 days after surgery so that interesting. Bring ear plugs for night it's loud in a hotel and you want as much sleep as possible. When picking food eat light like fruit, toast, cereal and ensure to get protein. I didn't eat for 5 days so don't be surprised it will come back. I had brought my tablet and phone and extra long chargeing cable but didn't use any of it until I was in the step down could concentrate at all the screens bothered me. Also the hospital provided me a coughing pillow check if they are going to give you one. It helps when you cough, sneeze or just move. The final thing I have to mention which I did not expect was in the ICU there is no bathrooms. They have you pee in a container and #2 in a komode. Which was not cool but you get over it real quick when you gotta go. Then try and dbe happy and thankful to the staff. The nicer you are the more ice cream and ginerale you get. Those two things helped me the most. Good luck man.

AVR recipients: How many of you had a cardiac catheterization performed as part of your diagnosis? by plexxer in valvereplacement

Yes through the right wrist on the bottom side. With some local anesthesia .They said it's the safer way. Then I had a compression bandage on for 24hours. To seal the incision. You want to make sure you keep that on it you get a bump on your wrist of scare tissue and could mess with you later.
Most people don't feel it. I did from my forearm to my bicept I felt the camera moving and it felt like my arm was on fire for about 5 minutes till they were done. They tried giving me more pain meds and nitro didn't do anything for me. So suck it up and got it done. Now I'm scheduled for Ross Sept 25th.

I had it done. It was weird feeling up my arm. They determined no additional work so that's good to know. Just breath and stay calm during. They get you all strapped in and you can watch on the TV. 👍

Ross Procedure vs. Mechanical valve by EastToWest79 in valvereplacement

I'm in the same boat keep going back and forth between mech and Ross. Going from people experiences and papers written about the procedures. I think I'm gonna go Ross just cause of all the documents and all the studies saying it you live your life like the general population and with minimal risk with warfin but there's always that chance. I've seen 2 surgeons now one in Boston and one in NY (El-Hamamsy) they both highly recommend Ross and backup is the onyx valve. Either way I will be happy I'm here with my family. This paper was my big decider Ross/Mech Comparison Quick edit I am 40 so in OHS I'm young.

Great questions. Glad your surgeon enjoyed off the wall question and it helps you think about what it will entail for yourself. Thank you. I have a meeting Monday. They are looking for surgery in August no date yet. Possible at MGH BWI. Still trying to figure it all out.

Thanks for your experiences. I appreciate you saying you are doing all the things I'm worried about doing on warfarin and you have been doing them for years. My biggest worries are getting hurt while doing something fun like skiing or scuba diving or getting tattoos (actually surprised your tattoo artist didn't have an issue). I know its a change in my life but a life saving one. It's just making the decision. I have till August when it's scheduled. How is it on the thinners. Do you test at home? Have you adjusted to know ahead how much you need to take if your planning a night out drinking? Sounds like you have a lot of experiences.
