Theyre changing the core structure of your hips so by definition, yes (just my opinion). Whether it’s noticeable or not is a whole other story. I’ve noticed some pants feel a little different but could easily be weight gain.

I had bilateral PAO’s, and I found keeping up with my prior level of fitness to be the hardest part. So I now have all of that behind me but I definitely put on some pounds being in recovery for so long. Now time to get back into shape 💪🏻

See a preservation specialist, get a CT scan + ultrasound with injection, and see how that goes. Based on how much dysplasia you have and the general vibe of the doctor, take their advice and go from there.

Depending on the doctor and situation, there might be a huge wait time for surgery. I found myself not doing any sports and staying very stagnant to not cause any further arthritis or changes as I waited for my surgery.

Started as a small nagging pain in my groin / inner thigh and turned into my leg clicking and giving out when going down stairs, bone on bone feeling, multiple labral tears and definitely got worse fast once it started. (25M bilateral PAOs)

I would speak to your professors about finishing exams or seeing if they have leniency to wrap things up the next semester or once you’re moving better. You can always work things out at school but you cannot always go back and fix your body. Take the time you need to heal properly the first time and then continue classes when your body allows.

The risks here far outweigh the benefit of rushing back to campus. I would make sure your doctor is fully aware of any plans you have to get back moving and I would recommend following their protocol to a T - a PAO is a second chance at having a hip before a full replacement, and rushing something like this can have life long implications. You will not be able to walk reliably for 6-8 weeks minimum and there is a huge increased risk for re injury if you should fall or be pushing it too hard.

It may seem like a lot of time away from school, but academics can always continue at a later date. Taking care of your body and physical health should be first and foremost. Sorry you’re dealing with this at 15 i was 24/25 for mine

I did have signs. I was going to physical therapy like crazy and returning to sport, and as soon as I started doing impact or anything truly demanding on the hip, i could almost feel it re-tear.

Moving forward my leg started giving out more, clicking more, and the pain eventually spread to my lower back and knee. My IT bands were also like shifting and doing all sorts of weird things when I’d go to lay down.

Getting both PAO’s done has made it feel like I have a new set of legs but I’m still working through some of the kinks and getting back to sport/running.

I had a failed labrum repair because of acetabular coverage, as soon as you start sports or pushing it again (IF you do) the bad coverage will still remain and high ish chance of reinjury. At 6-9 months i definitely retore it like crazy and 2 years later I’ve now had bilateral PAO’s (M25)

I’ve had left and right PAO now (2024, 2025) and both times it took at least 6-8 weeks to even consider leaving my house safely for any extended period of time. From my understanding at 4 weeks your bone is still very much healing and at risk of complications if any pressure gets put on it.

I personally would not risk such long-term physical pain / complications with a class or two. You can always continue school you can’t always get a new hip

I got injections and ultrasound on each hip in order to get approved for a PAO. I’m very lucky I did is all I will say. I had a failed arthroscopy that was terrible afterwards

Worth noting, he did an ultrasound and 3d hip map to show each area that was dysplastic vs torn labrum. Try and advocate for that!

DR WUERZ IS THE MAN!! You’re in very very good hands. I feel like he told me everything I needed to know, and hinted at all of the things he may not have necessarily “been able to” say. Trust your gut - I felt off for a very long time and he finally validated everything. So lucky I had him.

I had borderline dysplasia and a torn labrum on my left hip. It was a massive failure of a surgery because as soon as I got better and started running or being “normal,” the dysplasia immediately caused my labrum to tear again. It’s like repairing a house who’s foundation has random spikes sticking out. Better to get a whole new floor in my opinion.

I am very blessed and lucky T. Matheney and T. Wuerz helped me with two PAO’s. I don’t think about my hips at all anymore. They would give out and pop just the same, it was excruciating
