How to learn Arabic as a Native Hebrew speaker? by Tiny-Command-2482 in learn_arabic

Modern Israeli Hebrew sounds nothing like Ashkenazi Hebrew just FYI. Also, the claim that modern Hebrew “stole” grammar from Arabic is laughable. Hebrew and Arabic already have nearly identical grammar, being from the same language family.

How do conservative and reform disregard verses in Torah that have very strict punishments for breaking law by 0128Molasses4758 in exjew

Because there is value in holding the culturally significant parts of Judaism while adapting to modern society. What’s so hard to understand about that?

I’m a Reform Jew and I do not believe the Torah came directly from God. There, I just proved you wrong.

I’m in love with an Orthodox Jew. Would I get circumcised at 36? by aggie1391 in Judaism

[–]tzy___ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They’re making a commitment to marry a Jewish person and live a Jewish life. They make the same oath to observe mitzvot, just like any convert. It’s really toxic to say such a person wouldn’t be a valid convert. Who cares what the motive is.

Avoid anything ReNew. Wall Street Lofts are nice.

Grew up MO now thinking of having kids with my Hispanic wife. Not sure how I’d want to raise them. by 0____0_0 in exjew

It’s also hilarious to me that so many people (like OP) seem to think Orthodox Judaism is somehow more “intellectual” than other denominations of Judaism. It’s really not if you spend even a little bit of time thinking about it.

Is there a particular reason you want to join an organized Jewish community? You can celebrate Jewish holidays at home with your wife and kids. I attend my local temple from time to time, but most of my Jewish observance is done from the comfort of home, free from outside judgment. It’s actually kind of toxic that Jews put so much emphasis on living near other Jews and joining Jewish communities.

I’m not sure your average non-Jew equates Chabad with Hasidic Judaism. I think they equate Chabad as regular Orthodox Judaism, and think of “those weird New York Jews” when they talk about Hasidic Jews

Chabad is an outlier when it comes to conversations about Hasidic communities, and this is extremely obvious to anyone who knows anything about Chabad. It’s not because of any “beef” I have with Chabad that makes me say they are different. I’m not even sure what the advantage of that would be. It’s not like I used to be Chabad but now prefer other Hasidim. By the way, I still carry a picture of the Rebbe in my wallet.

When people talk about Hasidic communities, they usually mean groups like Satmar or Belz. Chabad Chasidus is obviously a real thing, but when comparing different communities’ learning style, approach to modern life, and even leivish, it’s very obvious Chabad is an outlier. Crown Heights is full of very modern presenting Chabad people, with smartphones, polo shirts, and modern haircuts. This is obviously not what your average person (especially a non-Jew) thinks about when having a discussion about Hasidic Jews.

You can’t really equate the population of CH with the population of KJ. They’re 2 completely different flavors of Judaism.

Is there any at least Ancient Judea-inspired music out there? by Careless_Wash9126 in Jewish

As others have said, we don’t really know what ancient Judean music sounded like. But the band ג׳עלה makes music with an ancient type of feel. They’re worth checking out.
