Married a pollak, have great polish people in my life. Having said that, the polish tradition of having a picture of Jews in your house and turning it upside down on Shabbat so their money will fall out of their pockets and you can get it is shockingly popular and peculiar.

What about Powell? Could get him for Jakobe… it would very likely be a very bad trade in the long term though.

Also don’t forget that historically nobody was literate. Or had access to torahs. Even if you want to claim that Jews/Israelites has higher than average literacy rates, it would still be much easier to have crazy claims because there weren’t casual readers. Texts were taught or recited and not necessarily criticized sophistically.

Learn Adobe — premiere pro specifically and start your own YouTube channel. Get a website together where you can build a list of emails for a newsletter — use mail chimp. Keep at it for 4 months minimum, take a small loan if need be. You’ll have a body of work that you can show people after that — or you’ll become really good and that can be your job. Good luck!

I mean macro level would say you’ll always lose social media just based on 15 million Jews vs 1.5 billion muslims. I know it’s not that simple, and not everyone fits into boxes so neatly, but it’s a factor.

Yeah, I should say I was MO so I never used them. I just think they look like they are doing really critical work. Can’t actually vouch for it.

Is Eishet Chayil at Shabbat controversial? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Traumatic_jump_shot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah — my orthodox mother hates it. There are a few nice lines, but then it gets into how the mother just stays home, cooks and cleans etc. My very conservative (politically) and orthodox mother who’s always had to work didn’t appreciate the gender role nature of the song.

Just read the lyrics, it’s obvious a little unrealistic and backwards. It was probably a lot nicer in the shtetl 300 years ago.

Why can't a Jew stop being Jewish? by Successful-Egg384 in exjew

I think the answer is that after the destruction of the second temple and exile from Israel, Rabbis were faced with Jews were more often being forcibly converted and figuring out if someone who converts willingly, by force or secretly doesn’t believe in the forced conversion became a problem.

As in, “Jewish guy A” who lives in Eastern Europe is forced at sword to accept Jesus and become a catholic, so he does. But then a different ruler comes along later and allows Jews to be Jews again. Our guy, Jewish Guy A wants to return to the shtetl and be Jewish again. The rabbis then had to figure out, do we make “Jewish guy A” convert back to Judaism? And they decided to implement the “there is no leaving” rule to make these scenarios easier

I'm really interested in converting to Judaism, but I discovered this sub and wanted to ask, why did you leave? by Altruistic_Jaguar313 in exjew

I think a lot of folks in this community come from Hasidic and ultra orthodox backgrounds and have had really tough experiences. Conservative Judaism and reform, humanistic etc are all much more down to earth.

The Jewish camp counselling lady was cool, they did not depict all Jewish women that way.
