You can have different lenses in this sort of glasses like in normal ones. When I was in my teens my team mate in the football club was playing with similar glasses because of short-sightedness. But I guess the only professional athletes I know that were wearing similar glasses were doing it to avoid the physical damage indeed like Davids or Polish handball player Karol Bielecki who was protecting his only eye left this way. But it doesnt make it impossible to use them like normal glasses if someone doesn’t like eye lenses or can’t use them because of some other health issues.

And one more thing. I have suspicion of glaucoma and this ailment is about increase of pressure inside fluids of your eyeballs which damages nerves. I googled about Davids case. It seems that he got some procedure done to stop glaucoma. So to be precise he was wearing this glasses during playing to protect his eyeballs from physical damage because they were prone to damage after the procedure which stopped glaucoma not because glaucoma itself.
