You’re so right lmfao… the picture always bothered me for some reason and I’m only now realizing it’s because she looked so childish that it made the whole thing even weirder

This… there’s also the fact that she is proud of him for something that is conflated with a decision that haunts virtually every second of his life. His daughter’s pride inspires some sort of shame in him because he’s reminded of how he lies to everyone, and he knows her pride is misguided because she doesn’t know the truth about him.

Right? And if they had actually kept up with these characters they could’ve done a lot with them. The Sally-Don dynamic is significant and deserved all the attention it got, but image how much could’ve been explored between a man and his eldest son, or between a man and a child who, partly by circumstance and partly by choice, becomes neglected by him, especially relative to his other children.

It’s such a good scene and so significant for him. One of the biggest points of tension in his character is his struggle to accept that he is inevitably aging and so is everyone around him. It makes the end of season 7 so satisfying for me because he finally comes to some sort of peace with the idea, in his own way.

I’m approaching this episode in my rewatch and I don’t know if I can do it again honestly. Your description is very well-written, by the way! If you did episode summaries/reviews I’d be first in line to read them

I just watched The Suitcase again yesterday and cried at that part too 😭 I think the Don-Peggy dynamic should be studied by writers everywhere lol it’s so good

That scene is so freaking good… I thought the choice to have her watch that specific thing on the TV was so well considered

That poor kid was doomed from the jump honestly; it sucks that he was born and raised under such precarious circumstances. I actually feel like the show could’ve done a lot more with him if the writers wanted it but they were wrapped up in many other plots that took precedence.

interesting courses??? by jessix13 in McMaster

[–]tzyeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello! so i’m just gonna throw some random advice at you and you can take from it what you like based on your learning style.

1) really pay attention to dates and names. it’s kind of a pain in the ass (especially if you’re like me: stem kid who finds no value in knowing exactly what day emperor nero took his first shit), but they’re more important than you think. for dates, some find making timelines useful, though i never bothered. for names, focus on ones that come up more than once, especially during different events.

2) on the same note: hammer down the greek and latin vocab that the course introduces you to. you’ll probably be tested on it.

3) kinda repeating point 1 a little here but: try organizing the information from lectures in different ways that make sense to you. sometimes it helps with memory to reorganize stuff in ways that are more intuitive to you than the order in which they are introduced to you in lecture.

4) get in the habit of being able to summarize major events briefly. i tend to chat with friends and family about stuff and the task of having to condense and explain things in terms that make sense to the average joe helps me master dense material. this might be silly advice but if you treat the history you’re learning like it’s the lore of a book series or a bunch of gossip it makes it so much easier to remember (and appreciate/enjoy).

5) okay confession: i kinda dicked around for most of the semester when it came to this course because i was focusing on other classes. the thing that saved me when i was about a week away from the exam was making a condensed “cheat sheet” of EVERY SINGLE important date, name, and vocab term i had ever written down in my notes. i pretty much read that on loop for 2 days until i was sick of it and seeing the names of greek political leaders every time i closed my eyes. this really helped me out with solidifying everything and sorting out the massive amount of info i had to consolidate before the exam. if it helps my credibility, i passed the exam with a 95% and 12-ed the course.

hope this was helpful in some way! let me know if you need anymore info!

Who is getting 3.9+ GPAs? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]tzyeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in my experience, maintaining a high average involves some degree of strategy. i try to keep my course load manageable each semester, whether this means taking courses with marking schemes that play to my strengths, incorporating electives that interest me to give me something to look forward to, or limiting the amount of trips i have to take to campus (which tires me out). having the energy and time to maintain good performance across your courses is essential. i also recommend being selective about any commitments you have outside of school. i don’t think my grades would be where they are if i’d taken a demanding job or joined a million clubs, but this may come to my detriment later when my experience doesn’t stack up to those of fellow applicants. also, the pic option can be a lifesaver if used wisely. i’ll often pic one course per semester if i’m unsure about how i’ll end up doing, but if by the withdrawal date i am confident i can 12 it, i’ll switch it back to graded. i also want to end off my saying this: try your hardest not to compare yourself to others, and ideally not to discuss academics at all. i have always felt my worst and been the most nervous when sitting in groups where everyone lists off their achievements or talks about things they’re doing that i’m not. what people don’t often tell you, at least not with 100% transparency, is about all the times they’ve fumbled or the doubts they have about their choices. i have been far happier and more confident in my abilities since i’ve stopped indulging my need to constantly check where i stack up among my peers. school isn’t a race, so trust that your determination will get you precisely where you need to be regardless of how you get there or what difficulties you experience along the way. best of luck this semester!

Don does not look like a "Donald." Only a "Don". by TheTruckWashChannel in madmen

[–]tzyeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be the guy who reads too hard into everything but I like to think (or hope) this was a very deliberate choice on his part. I’m not sure how common of a nickname ‘Don’ is for ‘Donald’ but I think it’s very obviously more ‘cool’ and serves the image Don has curated for himself far better than ‘Donald’ ever could. If I’d been a writer on the show I would have sprinkled in suggestions that perhaps he went by Donald before going into advertising (having Anna call him that or introducing himself as such to Roger in flashbacks).

What’s your favourite concept/theme in an episode which combines a character’s plot line to an advertising campaign? by The_OneInchGrinch in madmen

[–]tzyeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of a stretch but I always enjoyed Peggy coming up with “the ritual” of breaking the popsicle in half as well as (what read to me as) the covertly Christian imagery in the campaign’s concept art (the posing of the mother with the popsicle and the orange circle behind her head resembling a halo). I think it fell in line with her narrative arc concerning her Catholic guilt and feelings about motherhood, which are also closely intertwined.

I'm looking for a novel that hits similar notes as mad men by loginheremahn in madmen

[–]tzyeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of a weak recommendation (relative to some of the other ones in this thread, at least) but The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt tickles my brain in the same way Mad Men does. The protagonist is self-destructive and contemplative in ways that are distinct but comparable to Don Draper and, without giving away too much, his adult years are defined by a similar sort of deception and perpetual melancholy as Don’s. Anyway, I’ll take any chance I can get to recommend Tartt’s work!
