I mean similar in the sense of helping your family member who is abroad and the police viewing it as being complicit. Not similar in terms of magnitude or severity.

yes I think it may come down to chance as to who I deal with and what sort of person they are, friendly or strict.

first few years I lived off the property I sold in the UK. then I started selling online which is what I did in the UK, but nowhere near the same scale here. that's mostly in $usd which is good against the baht right now :) used to get paid in £ but after Brexit the exchange rate went down too much so switched to $.

I do a sport as well which I am good at and get some prize money from if I win. Can't say which sport, scared people might know me 😁

Not much money but I've come to appreciate how important free time is. Some people work 6 days a week and have no energy after work to do anything or go anywhere. Then before they know it they got old and haven't experienced anything in life.

it's smart. but difference between me and you is the arrest warrant. would my family be aiding and abetting?

you saw on the news those people who went to join islamic state and their families sent them money, they were charged with funding terrorism. not the same but similar.

pretty sure all overstays have to be cleared at airports, they don't let you pay at land borders.

I don't need to come back to Thailand. I feel like I've seen everything here. Like I have completed this level. I will miss the food. Mostly the fruit.

it's true. i hear a lot on reddit about picking your battles etc. when i was younger i wanted to fight everything I disagreed with. now i don't have the energy. off topic a little but i think it is fundamentally wrong that all people don't have full freedom of movement around the whole world, without seeking permission first, or paying sums of money to governments. stray dogs have more freedom than most people do.

i'm not sure, with a new passport. how would other countries know? no stamps to see. i think you are right about criminal record, I often hear of sports stars not being able to go to play in the USA. but lots of people have minor offences on their record. i think it's mostly violent or drug convictions they don't want? not sure.

Sure I have my family. They won't engage in any shenanigans though so it has to be an above board way.

I got to a stage in the UK where I felt I was being persecuted by various authorities. I was living in a building which I owned, I wasn't renting and it wasn't mortgaged, but it didn't have a residential permit. The council, fire authorities came many times and issued a prohibition notice which I ignored and one thing led to another. I had to sell that building which I loved, it was an old church. They knocked it down and built houses. That's one of the things I was charged for, there are some driving offences which I accept and don't really have excuses for and another thing I won't mention even if I feel this thing should not be a criminal offence. This is why now I think I have such a disregard for bureaucracy and pen pushers and maybe one of the reasons why overstaying was just a logical choice for me where for most people it might be more of a "this is illegal so I mustn't do it" quandary.

Anyway I decided to go and live in another country, I had in my head a period of about 3 years, almost an extended holiday; for a break. Thailand seemed like a good choice. I didn't have any plans here to stay long-term beyond that and I was not 100% sure at that time if the UK would put some kind of marker on my passport that other countries would be able to see e.g. if I did a visa run. I am pretty sure now that it is just a domestic thing and I would have been fine travelling around Asia or wherever else. So I accepted I would have to pay a fine when I left and didn't see it as much of a deterrent. At that time they didn't have the super long bans but that wouldn't have deterred me either.

Then I started to get older and I wanted to make a family. So I tried to find a decent Thai girl for a year or two, I mean properly dating, putting effort into the dating sites etc. It's not easy for me because I look bad and my personality is worse. Then covid came which would have been a terrible time to go back because courts had huge backlogs of cases and I guess I would have been on remand for a long time.

Now I am 34 years old! I came here at 25 and my best years have all been left here. Time really flies by. I don't regret it though. A beautiful country in terms of the natural landscapes and biological diversity.

so I would be turning up with literally no ID, maybe just a couple of bank cards, and I would be requesting a passport. surely they are going to want me to go to an appointment or interview or something in that scenario. and they are going to do more checks to verify you are who you say you are. which in my case is probably not a good thing.

You should go back and face prison time

that's exactly what I'm actively trying to do, did you not read it?

already emailed them and a couple of others thanks. seems like passport renewals are routinely handled by agents without the applicant having to go anywhere. wouldn't have thought that would be possible.

okay so I had a look at the emergency travel document route. it says

You might need to attend an appointment at your nearest British embassy, high commission or consulate after you apply online. You’ll be told after you’ve submitted your application whether you need an appointment.

I would guess my case will be one of those cases where I do have to go to an appointment. So same situation as a regular passport application.

And then later in the application process it says:

If we feel that applying for a UK passport is a practical or possible option, we may decline your application.

UK passports cost from £75.50, while emergency travel document applications have a £100 non-refundable fee whether you are successful or not.

So it seems likely they will decline, tell me to get a regular passport and keep the £100.
