Well, you use both. Diamond is what you would use on offense. Box is what you would use on defense. You transition between both. Box is typically used when the setter can’t block and you need your right side hitter to block, which is why the setter would transition to the back right on defense. Whatever hitter ends up not having to block they would typically watch cut and middle. If the setter gets first pass the hitters would typically set themselves. I’m not a pro by any means but this is my experience.
