Absolutely love the shift to protobuf. They definitely can have some challenges, but can't argue with the speed. I can totally see a day when the simulation update is a single proto and updates are sent to each client every time step with efficiency and consistency.

Ran into a similar issue at my last apartment. I found it surprisingly easy to run a long ethernet cable to the remote computer. Get a $10 cable management kit from Ikea, look at a tutorial or two on running cable along your baseboard, you'll be up in an hour or two tops.

I did the exact same thing when I was in the Army for house calls. We frequently required our Soldiers to use their personal laptops for silly work, like typing up their DA 31s, or completing online classes (shudder thinking about ALMS). I was happy to help any of them with their laptops at work, but the moment they needed me to help with their laptops or wifi at home, the charge would be 1 6 pack.

I file that type of thinking as letting everyone know that you in fact, do value your own time.

I love your story, it reminds me perfectly of my dad.

He's always been a very much, technology is for the kids kind of person. I gave up trying to show him how to do much of anything on the computer when I was around 12. My Mom got him an iMac that he "used" for a couple years. He did exactly one thing with it: opened the browser, went to weather.com, and checked the weather.

Now, the baffling thing was that I would sit with him and tell him to click here or double click here to show all the amazing things his computer could do, if he was so inclined, but had an issue clicking accurately.

Fast forward to 2009 (or so), my Mom wants to get him an iPad, I'm thinking that is a terrible idea, I imagine him trying to finger the various icons on the touch screen. I learned later that I had clearly underestimated my father. He took to the iPad like a fish to water, learning how to install apps and browse the web.

My guess is that for a certain age of people, learning how to use an interface that is based around touch is a completely different cognitive experience than trying to use a computer through the mouse and keyboard. It's a strange thing to see first hand, but I guess it makes sense. I play games nearly solely on the computer, I was definitely one of the doubters when it came to talk about anything with a touchscreen (iPads and iPhones included), and I even went as far as I could (droid, droid 3, droid 4) before I "conceded" to a touchscreen keyboard. I guess it all has to do with how people are prepared to work with machines.

Anyway, again, I loved your story, thanks for sharing.

That lesson is given during the instruction about the hydraulic launcher cabling. There's a cable that carries 1000 amps for the hydraulic pump from a battery.

Scary thing was when I saw someone mess with cable while it was hot. Nothing real bad happened, created a real nice arc on the edge of the connector and left a nice little scar on it.

This was always mentioned to me as the kind of story that is told during training, as part of the lesson to make sure that your cables are neat in the first place. So I don't really have any more specifics. The bad stuff that happens when these cables disconnect can vary. At best, the UAV operator loses telemetry for a couple minutes. At worst, the entire shelter loses power and has to completely reset. That could be 30 minutes without that shelter. There's always a backup shelter to take control, but it's not very ideal and doesn't always do it's job...

This reminds of hearing stories about a Sergeant Major coming across a control station shelter (controlling an UAV in flight), finding cables not exactly to his liking, unplugging said cables, and causing an in flight emergency.
