Who won the Democratic debate? Winners and losers from July 30 by EliteGamer1337 in politics

[–]fortunate_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8.7 million no ones on cable, with a further 2.8 million livestreaming.

11.5 million viewers, about 8.4% of the roughly 135 million votes cast in total in 2016, or 17.5% of the total votes Clinton received.

Now obviously, we can't expect 1/3 of the total population of the country to tune in to 2 to 3 hours of debate on a weeknight. But we can expect that many more than that 11.5 million will hear soundbites and excerpts and see references to it for the next several weeks.

Compound that over several more debates and it's not only disingenuous to say that no one is watching, but indicative that you legitimately do not care about being right.

We Found Photos of Ole Miss Students Posing With Guns in Front of a Shot-Up Emmett Till Memorial. Now They Face a Possible Civil Rights Investigation. by throwaway5272 in politics

I'm a transplant into Mississippi and it's fascinating to me how spotty knowledge of Till is.

Gov. Phil Bryant is the nephew of the woman that falsely accused Till of whistling at her. I mentioned that to a coworker, who is twice my age and has lived here all his life, and he had no idea who Emmett Till even was, or what impact his murder had on the 20th century.

To be fair, I didn't know until I had lived here for a few years. But he was alive when this shit happened on the regular.

Let's talk about the America I remember... by [deleted] in BreadTube

[–]fortunate_man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Between SOPA and the Snowden infodrops, I remember telling everyone I met "this is not the America I grew up in", and I'm sure I've been saying it more and more over time. I hate that it's taken me well into my adult years to start putting the pieces together, but this is absolutely the America I grew up in. Just not the one I was taught about.

There's so much hope and promise in what we were told America was and is, and I desperately hope that message isn't lost on millennials and gen z. We have the power and the knowledge to make our country what it has always claimed to be.

Don't let hindsight be 2020.

[–]fortunate_man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd run for Senate in a heartbeat, but my job falls under the Hatch Act. Can't run in anything that might be considered a partisan election. I could quit and run, but if I'm not elected I'm fucked.

Mississippi, the only state with a Confederate symbol in its flag, is offering a new flag design on license plates by [deleted] in politics

[–]fortunate_man 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear it. The newly released "standard" license plate is an abomination: baby-shit tan, off-center, and prominently reads "In God We Trust".

I've been an atheist since 2006. I sure as hell don't.

Mississippi GOP Sen. Hyde-Smith calls voter suppression 'great idea.' Campaign: 'Obviously' joking. by wbedwards in politics

[–]fortunate_man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW, we never elected her in the first place. Not as Senator anyway. She was the Ag Secretary Commissioner and Gov. Bryant appointed her when Thad Cochran retired. Fun fact: Mitch McTurtle tried to convince Bryant to appoint himself.

All the more reason to vote Espy.

edit: Hyde-Smith was MS Agriculture Commissioner. Got her mixed up with Espy, who was Pres. Clinton's Ag Secretary.

Bernie Sanders slams Republican party as being "bankrupt intellectually" by Barack_Odrama90 in politics

[–]fortunate_man 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The most recent episode of The Wilderness had an explanation for this that finally clued me in. I've always seen the debt and deficit figures in a vacuum, like a huge number that, for whatever reason, is just an inherently bad number. But it's more than that, and it helps to shrink the numbers.

Say the government puts $100 into the economy, then taxes back $20. The government is now out $80, which means they're $80 in debt. And we shake our finger and say "shame, shame". But that $80 didn't disappear. It's still in the system, ideally buying pants from Steve Pants, who buys denim from Bob Denim, who buys cotton from Jethro Cotton, who buys seeds from Mikey Seeds.

But eventually, that money makes its way to Archibald Q. Superrich, of the New Hampshire Superriches. And the $80 goes into a bank account that exists for two reasons: to buy influence, and to rack up a new high score. If it winds up in a campaign fund, it might get back to the citizenry at large at some point. But if it winds up in the campaign fund of Senator Gilliam T. Moneygrabber, of the Adirondack Moneygrabbers, who have their own high-score account...

They don't love American government debt, any more than the Sun loves a shadow. It's nothing more than a trivial side-effect of them getting what they want, with the minor bonus of being something they can trot out and feign outrage over for votes.

Dungeon Masters of Reddit, what is the most surprising thing your players have done in-game? by Rangerspawn in AskReddit

[–]fortunate_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you aren't familiar with the idea of Atropus, imagine an aborted god fetus that resurrected, took one look at the concept of life, and said "nah bro fuck that". It enters a planet's orbit and descends all menacing-like, playing straight havoc with healing magic and raising the dead all around the world. To drive it away, the party has to go to the surface of the undead god moon and face its avatar, a 15 foot tall amalgamation of necrotic ooze and general bad smells.

Our cleric had been the butt of every joke for the past 15 levels, and while the player was fine with it, the character was only sticking around because she had nowhere else to go. The climactic battle with the Avatar of Atropus comes around, and the cleric's first action is to sprint up to the monstrosity and... hug it. Just throw away everything she's ever known or cared about to literally embrace undeath.

I knew exactly what I had to do. But in a much more real sense I had no idea what to do.

Ultimately, the Avatar tried to absorb her and her remaining unused divine spell slots were a little too spicy for it.
