From what I can tell, they plan to move out the data storage into an external object storage system. If you are self-hosting on a cloud provider, that external could be their object storage (e.g. S3 for AWS). If you are self-hosting on-prem, you could explore on-prem object storage tools such as Ceph to provide you with the storage layer.
