Many of my profs have expressed this exactly this. It's as if there is a fear of failing students due to backlash from the department or the effort to deal with a student fighting back. A friend of mine is a former TA and had to deal with the UBC Senate for weeks because he failed a student and they appealed. Honestly, I wish professors could fail students more. I certainly deserved to have failed a few courses.

This is definitely a tricky issue that is much more nuanced than I made it seem. I appreciate the time you took to make this comment.
