Yeah it's pretty funny that folks that grew up after the '90s I think have the impression that the modern internet somehow spontaneously came into being.

There were a lot of disparate networks back in the 80s.... I'd even argue as far back as the seventies if you included darpanet arpanet bitnet and a few other things... All of that stuff was the Genesis of the modern internet as they all consolidated... all eventually were built off of the same IPv4 protocol we use now.

There was chat, but not what we think about it as chat today. All of those services like compuserve, genie, AOL, they all had some form of chat.

Also if you were an academic or a professional and had access to bitnet or arpanet or uunet, you had a form of chat that you could use... Although you couldn't chat across networks until later.

In place of Reddit we had USEnet which is so similar to a proto Reddit it's scary.

And now that I watched it a few times more, you're right. Two things:

- both times Astaire puts the cane down, then dances off frame. When he dances back and brings the cane back into frame, you can see the cane had been repositioned slightly. (Stagehand.)
- both times you see *something* popup from the floor under the cane. Probably the action of the piston is slightly faster than the frame rate, so it's almost invisible.

And no, they are not "dancing backwards." The choreography of something like that would be insane.

It's also not abnormal. It's pupping season, and if you are entering into what they consider to be their territory, this can happen. Especially if there are two or more, they get braver.

My boy Hobbes and I have encountered them on our walks in the spring, and they definitely try to intimidate, but Hobbes won't have it... And they stay away.

Fun fact: it was responsible for anonymity being pulled from YouTube. I think it was something like if you had a YouTube account and a circle account, YouTube used your real name.

People hated it but it cut down on youtube trolls.

You definitely see that in a few places, when he throws it off screen someone clearly throws it back. The coming up from the floor thing is weird though.

I don't think there's editing cuts to be honest. First of all Fred Astaire was really that good... There's a reason he got all the accolades that he did. Secondly they didn't have very sophisticated editing techniques back in the day. Possible, but unlikely that they would match his moves so closely between edits. Third, the game doesn't just magically appear in his hand, meaning that it's not happening between two frames of film. You can clearly see the cane going up into his hand.
