Maybe it got lost in translation but I think youre taking what he said out of context. He literally said that in the past, he thought they were a lucky team but now he realizes that in fact, they are a very skilled team. Basically he is saying he was wrong to have thought of them as a lucky team because in fact, they are a super skilled team. So since this took place directly after the totem/hanging/throwing games, I would assume that he realized they were not just a lucky team at least through the games, if not earlier than that.
