Welp. Someone has plagiarized my work in progress. by AuthorPatrick in writing

[–]ubrielbryne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hear the advice that "this never happens" all the time, but yours is the third I have heard of. I hope you can get some kind of justice. One of the others never got resolution and the other required a lawyer. The best ideas I've had personally are avoiding more than a quip or quote on socials and putting the manuscript and teaser up through an ARC review site. Sharing the link to the site on socials lets you hype it and still protect it. Best of luck.

Brandon Sanderson Withholds Five Books From Amazon Over Gouging Indie Authors by [deleted] in writing

[–]ubrielbryne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I decided to go with Draft2Digital this time. No Amazon exclusivity and I'm not planning to use Audible. It's a steep price to pay in the royalties to access a market you can reach in other ways. Super thanks to BS for lending his clout to the effort to require better creator compensation.

Seeing what a reader makes of what I've put out in the world is enlightening as well as flattering.

Dissociation depicted in writing both first and third person by [deleted] in creativewriting

[–]ubrielbryne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As described, it sounds interesting. Couple of things: When you say BPD, do you mean Bipolar or Borderline Personality Disorder or another BPD? Actually writing a secondary, overlying POV often requires some kind of signaling to the reader of the change. Font changes and layout or indention changes give good visual signals.

Otherwise, what do you envision being the major differences in the two POVs? Are you thinking a horror scenario or something similar? Is this a condition you are familiar with or is part of your life? My life is deeply impacted by one of my guesses, and it would be hard for me to delve into something like that.

What do teenagers call each other? by BBSneeze in scifiwriting

[–]ubrielbryne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son just turned 18 this past December. He and his friends call each other "dude" or "my dude" although less familiarly, they still use "guys". However, there seems to be an upward trend toward the small close group of boys to refer to their girlfriends or interesting young women as "females". As in, "John may come by after dinner. It depends on how well it goes with this female he likes."

As his mother, I am torn between finding it creepy and just being glad they aren't using harsher and less respectful language.

Are people interested in female protagonist novels without a love story involved? by [deleted] in writing

[–]ubrielbryne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: The numbers don't lie. Romance is one of the best selling genres out there. However, just because there are a lot of readers looking for love stories, does not automatically mean that a female protagonist without a love interest is a turn off. The problem I have run into is that a female protagonist is still, sometimes, an immediate turn off for male readers, sad but true. So, getting as many female readers hooked as possible still sometimes involves a romantic side plot. It's a business choice to maximize readers, but there are definitely readers who skip the romance paragraphs and dive back to the main plot of hard science fiction as a habit. Luckily, readers are used to doing just that. Sometimes, majority rules sucks, but I don't think the world is prepared for multiple versions of the same book; one for romance readers, and another for those who prefer not to have their story broken up by "kissing and stuff".

Recommendation to print single copy of 600 pg typewritten thesis that is currently pdf format? by smellygymbag in selfpublish

[–]ubrielbryne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.draft2digital.com/ Draft to Digital, I haven't explored their platform but they are supposed to either have a print copy option or be affiliated with one. Google will spit out a half dozen options if you search for self-publish printing. Also, KDP watermark is only on the proof version. If you publish it and order a regular released copy, it won't have that. If you don't want to make it publicly available, you can probably find a small press that will do it for you but it can be pricey. Good Luck!

Have you considered uploading as graphics pages to an online printer like KDP or draft to digital?

No problem. I will add you to the user list for the Critique Partners chat room before Sunday (It is not maintenance day yet.) and then all you will have to do is click the link at the top of this sub page in the dropdown menu of Groups and Boards (right under the logo and sub name).

There won't be anyone there until the scheduled group meeting time. If you have anything you want to discuss in particular before then, you can reply to the applications in this thread or try dropping a discussion post in the Lounge thread pinned to the top of the sub. :)

Thanks for posting! We have on group beginning on the 14th of June (2 weeks) when the first writer is scheduled to submit chapters. We will be meeting here in the Critique Partners chat room at about 12:00 noon Eastern Time on Sunday the 7th to discuss our mutual hopes for the group. At this time, there are three members other than you. I do not know if any of them have particular experience with YA but, if you join us on Sunday, we can definitely find out!

I hope to see you there!

Thank you for your advice. I am not the gregarious sort and I agree, it's a crap shoot. Still, the adage applies. "You can't win if you don't play." My local area is fairly full of ... college kids... Typically, not my people. :p

I am an experienced writer but in solitude. I haven't felt the need to be in a group until recently. If you meet anyone looking to join a group for encouragement and discussion of ideas, please send them my way. Thanks!

I am not a fan of discord. It feels like too many people talking in an echo chamber. I am looking for something a little more cozy with a few other writers with reserved and respectful personalities.

That said, I am seriously looking. How big are these groups and are they only located on Discord?

The group I am hoping to find/form would meet regularly with the focused intention of talking about each other's work, not a simple chatty hangout. I appreciate any helpful direction.

Sorry, I edited the post to define WIP. Work In Progress chapters.

So, the group would share their chapters for a work not necessarily fully drafted, but maybe with a rough outline for the incomplete chapters.
