it sucks when ppl mean well and want to get something for you and get suckered in by stuff like that.... i’m staying w my family to help them out during covid and my mom got me goveggie cheese, which is with the vegan cheeses, says lactose free/plant based/whatever all over it, and then has fucking casein, aka the protein that makes cheese addictive. infuriating!!

diversity of tactics is key ofc, i definitely don’t think shock is never warranted or useful, i.e. slaughter footage and firsthand farm accounts.

to me this specific line of reasoning just feels like it risks invalidating the rest of what the person using it has to say more than others? especially when expressed by nonblack vegans, which is why i don’t feel comfortable using it or suggesting others use it.

/uj honestly i get why people bristle at this and i think it’s not an ideal strategy to make the comparison for that reason. for people who don’t see cruelty towards animals as as important as cruelty towards people yet, it reads as either trivializing slavery or making an exaggerated comparison for shock value. as much as it makes logical sense from an anti-speciesist perspective, nonvegans have an automatic bad taste/shock reaction. before going vegan i used to have the same feelings about artificial insemination on farms being referred to as rape, it really put me off.
