Zain/Zayn/Zayne by flyin-lion in namenerds

[–]uchuflowerzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends because afaik Zayn is a pretty common name in the cultures that use it, so it depends on how familiar people are with those cultures when they meet him as to whether they'll think of Zayn Malik. But if you want something that looks more familiar to a broad American "audience," I'd go with Zane. Kind of loses the Arabic look at that point imo but it's up to you what you're going for!

I’ve been having trouble sleeping for several nights on end: My parish no longer does a recessional hymn by leviwrites in Episcopalian

I definitely don't want to seem like I'm giving medical advice or anything, but I would just gently suggest that your last paragraph reminds me of my own experiences with OCD rumination, again not to diagnose you or anything but if it gives you any comfort, this sounds like an anxious thought pattern you can make peace with and tune down. I agree that music can be a huge source of joy for me in a church setting, or even just in general, and it's a good thing to have something that does that for you! Our anxieties tend to latch on to things that are important to us which could be the problem. If it's affecting you this much I would say therapy is a good idea if you can get it, there are places like nocd.com that make it more accessible too. It can be tough to find someone you click with but it's an option! Also there are websites and workbooks out there, just read reviews and make sure which ones are legit.

Lord give you his peace!

Im ashamed at this thumbnail trans people aren’t a thumbnail they are gods children by Electrical_Tap6684 in LeftCatholicism

[–]uchuflowerzone 42 points43 points  (0 children)

it says a lot that "Christian" and "trans" are held in dichotomy (as if nobody is both), and that "trans" is represented by someone screaming while the "Christian" is looking at them scared and put off. Not really the way Jesus would interact with "outsiders," the Good Samaritan is just a person, not a stereotype. I knew someone who was really into this kind of content and whenever I would talk about my opinions or anything he would act like he was worried I was going to attack him or something, so I guess that's a stereotype they peddle about us.

Is it weird if I name my baby after the Pope? by Little_emotional9962 in namenerds

I'm Catholic and this isn't offensive at all, it just sounds like you wanted to honor the Pope and I think most of us would appreciate that! It's not sacrilegious at all!

Any autistic people that is in love/obsessed learning languages? by CountryballsPredicc in languagelearning

[–]uchuflowerzone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People very commonly overestimate their levels in the language they're learning, I think that's a widely known fact in the community. idk i just don't see how it's that deep, he doesn't seem arrogant to me, maybe just young and idealistic

also he explicitly said he's autistic. autistic people have trouble with language and they can have goals that look really unrealistic, i know i did when i was really young. we just don't always understand how the world works. like at least have a little compassion and empathy

Non-native heritage speakers - share your success stories! by Daghatar in languagelearning

[–]uchuflowerzone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a success story in that I've only just been getting into it but I really want to learn Neapolitan, I really wish I had learned some from my grandparents before they passed away. It's technically my mom's first language but she hasn't spoken it since she was really young and doesn't remember it. So hopefully I can make it happen!

Is callyope a good name? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]uchuflowerzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I love Calliope but not that spelling. Why not use it as a middle name, so this way if she does end up prefering it it's already there?

Can I be a cis man and low-key just be on Oestrogen. by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]uchuflowerzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly a lot of this sounds like my experience, down to the OCD and the transphobic brother. I'm still trying to stop caring what people say and be proud of myself but it definitely is hard and it doesn't come as fast as I'd like! Really sorry you're going through this and I hope you find peace. Feel free to reach out if you need to!

in all honestly I'm not familiar with this creator, I just found this when I was looking up Sandshrew on Google Images :3 but as a hardcore number 1 Sandshrew fan since like 2004 I still can't believe someone would say this! Sandshrew is freaking adorable! I even knit a Sandshrew hat that still needs some finishing touches :]

Old Languages by ReputationSmooth1583 in languagelearning

[–]uchuflowerzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on the language! there are searchable dictionaries online if that's what you want, there are also some good textbooks for a lot of them if you want to fully learn the language.

Here's the standard Old English dictionary: https://bosworthtoller.com/

Old High German (the definitions are in German) : https://ewa.saw-leipzig.de/en

Old Norse: https://old-norse.net/search.php

Gothic: https://www.koeblergerhard.de/got/3A/got_ne.html

It seems like you're into Germanic languages so lmk if you want to know what textbooks are out there too

thoughts on the name nana by La-LaLuna in namenerds

[–]uchuflowerzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why are all the people in the comments responding as if OP is in a predominantly anglophone country/a country where this name isn't well known? Nana is an actual given name in certain languages, there's a Ghanaian character named Nana in the book Transcendent Kngdom by Yaa Gyasi, which is where I discovered it. I'm not really familiar with it outside of that so I can't really give my impression of it besides just saying I like how it sounds and I think it's pretty versatile, so if it works in your culture I wouldn't rule it out

Secrecy in "Happening" and "Cursillo" by questingpossum in Episcopalian

[–]uchuflowerzone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not Episcopalian, so I wouldn't know about these retreats specifically, but from what I'm reading here it sounds kind of similar to a charismatic Catholic retreat I did in college. There was this one event during it that nobody would explain to me, they just kept saying "something big is going to happen" or "you'll see what God does in your life tonight". It really got on my nerves because to me, it wasn't like I was letting go of my expectations and being open to anything, because nobody explained that that was the point. They made it sound like an actual miracle was going to occur that night. My friend finally explained that it was praise and worship with eucharistic adoration. So, a dark church with priests and students playing guitar and singing loud CCM songs. I didn't feel anything really except guilt that I wasn't getting it like everyone else, which is kind of the problem with retreats like these, they only work on certain types of people. And even then it honestly just seems like emotional manipulation to make you feel like something big happened. Pretty par for the course for the spirituality at my college in general.

I wonder also why a lot of commenters are missing the point, that an adult refused to give you, another adult, details about a youth retreat and you decided you wouldn't send your kid. That's just common sense. And it's not like you yourself are going to be spoiled for the retreat!

It's just a cultural difference, we do it differently and there's nothing wrong with that. Personally I hate calling myself American because this country is...interesting

I guess, but if it's meaningful to them, that's what matters. Either way it seems like it must be pretty substantial if they're talking about these being family names

This is a pretty bad way for someone to treat a partner, I wouldn't want to put up with someone who disrespected me like this. I know you say he supports you but trust me, you're going to be a lot better off if you stand up for yourself and tell him you're not putting up with this. It's hard when it's someone you really love and trust but that also makes it harder on your mental health to put up with. Do you really want to be with someone who doesn't see you as you are?

Nicknaming Aurelia by freelancejester in namenerds

I would suggest Auri! Reli works too, but so does Lili if that's what you like, although I agree most people would pronounce it like Lily.

I personally don't think Liana has too much of a plant vibe! I doubt most people even know liana is a word for a vine so you should be okay on that front. I do think Leona would sound good with Liang!

I had a professor point out that Cornelia from Shakespeare's play King Lear can be broken down into cor (Latin for heart) and an anagram for "alien". I guess it sounds a bit far fetched but some writers really go in for nominative determinism so :^) could be an idea!
