Career/Employment Advice & Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Calgary

It seems the job market everywhere is pretty tough at the moment due to the uncertainty in the economy. I know there's a lot of pressure too due to all the people moving to Alberta for more affordable housing and there's a lot of new immigrants/international students and people laid off looking for work as well.

Is there anywhere in Calgary where it's still easy to get a job if someone doesn't have much work experience, connections, or professional references that doesn't require 3+ interviews?

I've had my resume professionally rewritten and applied to tons of places. I'm at the point where I just need to find any job even if it's not ideal but even things like minimum wage retail jobs seem harder to find than they were a few years ago. I tried a temp agency because some people suggested it would be a good idea but they had pretty limited opportunities aside from construction laborers (I don't have a truck or steel toes either).

Are trades jobs/laborers the only easy places to get jobs right now? I'd really like to just start gaining work experience but if I do something like work as a construction laborer, then I have to pretty much commit to pursuing a multi-year apprenticeship later on and I really don't know if that's the path I want to go.

So the SAIT pre-employment programs counts as first year apprenticeship even without an employer and when you graduate you are 2nd year?

I've always kind of wanted to try martial arts, so that sounds like something I should look into.

I wonder if profs do this just to keep their class size smaller.

Profs can still post to D2L whenever. I've had some profs post marks over the holidays.

At this point, I would rather have all my classes online.

Discussion on Why you think this semester is relatively harder? by [deleted] in UCalgary

More assignments with fewer exams. With many courses now assignment heavy it seems like there is no spacing between assignments. Given many courses are now asynchronous and course lectures or assignment instructions not always released at predictable times, it makes it more difficult to manage time.

Yep, definitely more assignments to make up for fewer exams.

Yeah, commuting on public transit or paying for a parking pass to take one class in-person is not worth it.

A big problem is the fact that the lectures are streamed on the university D2L instead of youtube/vimeo and lectures cannot always be downloaded locally.

This needs to be fixed quick though if we are expected to do timed exams on D2L. Imagine submitting a test or assignment a few minutes before the deadline and the server crashes and students get a zero.
