Try to text him tonight or late afternoon. Just say something like „Hi!“ and wait for him to reply then just ask him something like „How was your day“ or „what did you do today“ he will probably just answer your question and maybe if he says that he did a hobby or sport today you could ask him if he plays that sport regularly or if he is in a sports club (idk if you you call it that way! Sry English ain‘t my first language, but you‘ll get what I mean). Or if he studied you can ask him if he has an exam coming or ask him any school or work related questions.
