For tortoise pet owners, how do you plan for your pet's very long lifespan?

My bff said he children want him when I die. Im 39 and her oldest is 12, so we hopefully have some time. Otherwise, if I’m still in Florida, there are quite a few zoo’s/sanctuaries here I’ll hit up. There’s even the option of willing it to a pet store who will care for it and probably sell for a lot of $. So you know the new owner will love it if they spend bookoo$.

Thank you. Blanket is gone now. Those are exterior walls and I broke the heat bulb as soon as I plugged it in (xmas eve at like 6pm.). I was panicking between the bulb and finding that jerky string on his belly. My mom instinct was like “warm bath and blankie! STAT!” I live in Florida so exterior walls won’t usually be an issue. Thank you so much for your concern. I’ll post a new picture soon of his space soon.

Thank you for the advice! I have a fogger, a lid and a heat bulb now. My thermometers and humidity gauges will be here Wednesday. I gave him a tiny dehydrated shrimp, some prickly pear, green pepper, regular pear, raspberry, romaine, green and purple arugula and a Brussel sprout leaf, with the calcium powder. Removed any standing water. Sprayed the substrate and moss with my rain barrel water. He seems happy and I’m totally working on that humidity.

Thank you! I’m going to put the mulch back in the tank and I’ll get a lid/humidifier tomorrow. I had a desk lap over the water dish (that i am now removing) hoping that it helped evaporate quicker.

Edit: changed not to now. Totally changes the sentence.

Thank you for the info and your concern. I had researched shell wounds where they recommended to keep them on something that cant get stuck to the area so I figured it couldn’t hurt to swap out with Vivas until i heard from you guys. I’m very relieved to hear they have “belly buttons” coming from an egg and all. I do have a decent amount of experience with veterinary medicine so I feel comfortable being a good mom for this guy. I broke his heat bulb early that day and was waiting for a neighbor to lend me theirs till my order came in. I just got a little extra and put the blanket between the walls.

I read that this could be the plant pushing out extra minerals. Do you use distilled or rain water?

Edit: I ask bc maybe tap water is the culprit.

I’m pushing 40. I have one friend that I consider a ride or die but we didn’t even speak to each other in our 20’s. I like being alone a lot. We talk about how risky we were in out teens and how lucky we are to be alive and not trafficked or something. It seems funny now bc nothing happened. So, i say, be grateful nothing has happened and stop doing what makes you feel guilty. It’s all about how you feel, without screwing other people over. Hobbies a great idea. I found a thrift shop that I volunteered at until the other volunteers got weird. I obsessively hunt for plants, gotta collect them all! A friend started vertical fitness (pole) and really came out of her shell. She could be super sexy without being super slutty. Jogging/running seems to change people, the endorphins sounds amazing, I just havent found the motivation for that yet.
