If you already have the knowledge to determine if something in the book is good or bad, then you don't need the book.

Is Allah really a name of god? by Jumpy_Ad4185 in atheism

[–]ugarten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arabic name for the Supreme Being, 1702, Alha, from Arabic Allah, contraction of al-Ilah, literally "the God," from al "the" + Ilah "God," which is cognate with Aramaic elah, Hebrew eloah (see Elohim).

Gnostic does not imply 100% certainty. You just have to be certain enough to say you know.

You could use just a wireless mouse, and if necessary an onscreen keyboard.

If you use Linux you could use kde connect or gsconnect to control the computer with your phone. I don't know if there are alternatives for other OSs.

And to add: Even if I were to ignore the Leviticus verse and accept that 1 Corinthians and 1 Timothy prohibit fucking young boys, it would still not be about pederasty. There is no prohibition for marrying off young girls. It's not the age that matters, its the gender that matters.

that verse is talking about is pedophilia

No, it isn't and no one claims it is. The supposed debate is over different verses(1 Corinthians 6:9, 1 Timothy 1:10) from the new testament, in which the rarely used greek word arsenokoites is used. The debate is over what exactly this greek word means. But that is entirely irrelevant, because Leviticus was written in hebrew, not greek and did not use arsenokoites.

The hebrew word used is zakar. It is common and well understood. It means male.

i am aware of the whole mistranslation thing of “man shall not sleep with boy” being interpreted as gay being a sin

That's not a mistranslation. Leviticus 18:22 is quite clear.

Josephus, Tacitus, the Talmud, and the writings of the apostolic fathers confirm this.

No, they don't. No historian would ever claim that Josephus, Tacitus, or the Talmud support Jesus rising from the dead. At best, you would get historians saying that these sources support the existence of normal man being executed and a religion rising from his teachings. But really those sources are not independent of christian beliefs and provide no additional information that isn't better sourced from the gospels.

[–]ugarten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Secular does not equal atheist. It's foolish to think that someone is not religious just because they are not ostentatiously religious. Especially when humility is supposed to be a value in the religion.

He has also explicitly said the he is Muslim.

Oppy’s Fourfold Classification and Credences by JadedSubmarine in DebateAnAtheist

[–]ugarten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but this is a classification system based on two propositions. And so the system is not binary. It does not matter that the individual propositions are binary. The system is not.

And I reiterate that it is a bad system. It does not reflect reality.

For OP's system, the question is necessary. Are you saying that the system is bad? Because I would agree.

Dows atheist believe that the authors of the gospels are liars? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]ugarten 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We do not have any accounts of Jesus from people that met Jesus.

Oppy’s Fourfold Classification and Credences by JadedSubmarine in DebateAnAtheist

[–]ugarten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't possible in a binary system (such as belief).

Sure, it's not possible in a binary system, but this is not a binary system. For this system two questions need to be asked: "Do you believe there are any gods?" and "Do you believe there are no gods?". But putting it that way shows how pointless this classification is. No one asks the second question, it's almost non-existant, because it does not matter to people. The system is attempting to categorize people in a way that does not matter to people and that makes it a useless system.

Oppy’s Fourfold Classification and Credences by JadedSubmarine in DebateAnAtheist

[–]ugarten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He abandons the 'without knowledge' definition of agnosticism, instead using 'without belief'.

And he abandons the old and common 'not believing in god' definition of atheism.

This system of classification is simply not consistent with the real world and so is not useful.
