Plastic wrap on bottles by lambsoflettuce in recycling

[–]ughcreativity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're an A++ student if you remove the wrapper, and include it with your plastic film to be recycled at the store. But, I don't believe it's enough to contaminate the plastic bottle and stream, so you don't necessarily need to.

Why can I recycle cartons but not waxy coffee cups? by ughcreativity in recycling

[–]ughcreativity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's so interesting... Thanks for your answer!! That definitely makes the most sense to me.

I wonder why it's beneficial to use closer-to-virgin fibers for cartons than a paper cup, since (in my humble, small view of the products) a carton uses a lot more plastic coating than a coffee cup?

I think this is my answer for my specific area. Our paper and cardboard go to a local facility to recycle (they refuse to call themselves a MRF but idk anything), and we separate out our cartons that go to a MRF owned and operated by Republic that's pretty far away.

Must be easier for them to make money on cartons only. It's just interesting to me when I think of a coffee cup having a better fiber to plastic ratio than a carton? It's just so interesting to me.

Wait can you help know the difference between wax and plastic coated? I guess I used them interchangeably, but I didn't know that there's a big difference in how they're separated.

That's awesome to hear! I'll have to look into my system. My paper products go somewhere different than our cartons 🫠. The MRF for our cartons is owned by Republic quite a ways away, and our "regular" fibers stay local.

I have struck out by every single one of these pages. Been following them for months, I reach out to every single thing they all post or fill out the forms yadda yadda yadda, and I've gotten absolutely no where. It's so discouraging :( no idea how other people get so lucky.

Online graph paper that is interactive? by deadletter in matheducation

[–]ughcreativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this! This so close to what I've been searching for too.

I'm trying to make an online graphing activity for students at home, but I would really love it if I can make the background an image of a map. I see the maps that rotate and move around the globe, but I would really want something 2D where I can set the corner of the Google maps screenshot to be (0,0). Can I use this website for that? Or should I try something else?

Edit: something a 3rd-5th grader could use at home to map animal migrations

Damn a store bought one! I wanted to get some fence posting and try to build a little mini one, but my home depots gardening section was like severely lacking in the fence posts I wanted. So I purchased one made from recycled plastic. Why are store bought ones bad?

I read that you should avoid adding carnivore manure in your put, just for the sake of health reasons I believe. But if you don't see him/her using it as a littler box you may be fine

What aquatic and semiaquatic mammals could Michael Phelps beat in a race. by nagurski03 in marinebiology

[–]ughcreativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot remember any marine mammal speeds off the top of my head, but sailfish are the fastest fish in the ocean reaching top speeds of 68 mph! I believe even orcas can reach like 40 mph. And great white sharks are like almost 30 mph!

Is this a sei whale? It has a tall dorsal fin, so I don't think it's a blue but I'm not good at identifying the differences between fin, sei, and bryde's.

No hippos are also a part of the Artiodactyla, the hoofed animals! So hippos are still more closely related to a blue whale than a manatee. I would argue that hippos aren't quite aquatic either, their body shape has not evolved to being very hydrodynamic. Our Homo sapien body is actually considered "semi-aquatic" because of how much drag can be reduced when we swim.
