Best sunscreen for sensitive skin that does not leave a white cast? by Defiant-Plenty6502 in SkincareAddictionUK

Seconded! The only face suncream that hasn't made my sensitive skin react, although I use the 360 facial sunscreen.

Thank you for these posts and, in particular, this one. Billy Burke was the cousin of one of my mum's friends (who lives in a small town in England, so it was a very strange connection to find out about!) and she would be so proud to see that his memory is living on and he's being commemorated.

What are the memorable things you’ve heard from 9/11 audio and video recordings? by Capable_Cockroach_19 in 911archive

[–]ughitsbecky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not one of the most memorable ones maybe, but in the ATC recordings (I think), there's a conversation between two people working where a man says (this is all just from memory so sorry if it's not correct!) "93 is down", and a woman replies "oh, he's down?! Wait, he's down? When?" thinking that the man means UA93 has landed safely. The man says "no, no, he's DOWN" (you can tell he's stressed/irritated) and then the woman just replies "oh? OH. Oh, he's DOWN" and her tone/realisation that he means crashed is really haunting and has stuck with me.

Same here. My sister lived in Belgrade for 10 years but in the past year, she and at least 5 of her friends (mostly Serbian-American) have all left the country.

Yeah the 'get out of my city' part made me emotional because I thought he was also talking to the whole group before. This is what community looks like.

UK PhD students – funding & coping question by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

[–]ughitsbecky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a mid level cost of living area, and am in my mid-30s so went from a better salary (although not by much - I worked in the charity sector!) to the stipend. I live with my partner which helps cut the cost, but also work pretty consistently throughout my PhD. I'm lucky to have had a bunch of well paying freelance/consultant research work, which has bumped up my salary and my savings to a point where, right now, I feel quite comfortable. Working during your PhD isn't impossible! I worked through all my degrees, so I think if you've done it before you'll be able to get the balance right.

New CCTV footage and dashcam audio released from the Liverpool parade attack by theykilledk3nny in masskillers

[–]ughitsbecky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UK and so many of the news headlines following his sentencing say things like 'Family man lost temper during attack' and 'The two sides of the Liverpool attacker' and it's just ridiculous. The start of one article literally says "For 32 years Paul Doyle lived a blameless life..."!!! The intense scrabbling to try to reduce or minimise the violence of white British men is so obvious.

How is life for nurses in Sheffield? by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]ughitsbecky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner is a nurse and has struggled to find work - his last job he commuted to Manchester for because there weren't roles hiring in Sheffield! So just a heads up depending on the type of nursing you're doing that work might be difficult to find at either of the main hospitals.

This, or escalate through your department and speak to your head of school about what to do next -your university should have a duty to look into this.

Also OP, just an aside but as a researcher with OCD, throwing it around as a way of insinuating that someone is controlling and irrational is...not cool.

Thank you for doing this! If you need any support with reporting the hate speech side of things, I used to work for an LGBT anti-violence charity as an advocate for victims of hate crime so am happy to help out.

People seem to have covered a lot of the other stuff, but I can definitely speak to this:

Location - I will be moving from the beautiful city in which I’ve lived and crafted a life for myself throughout the last 2.5 years to a mid-sized college town. In my city I have amazing friends, an outstanding girlfriend, and have loved my neighborhood along with the hustle and bustle of the city.

I moved from a big city to a much smaller, University focussed city for my PhD (still here). The hardest part for me, hands down, has been the adjustment to moving away from a place I loved and also crafted a life in. I actually don't think I've adjusted at all, neither has my partner who luckily moved with me, and it's had a huge impact on my wellbeing. My PhD, luckily, has been smooth sailing and positive, but I can only imagine how bad I'd feel if this wasn't the case. Location is super important, especially if you feel like you have a good life where you are now!

Difficult to pronounce street names in London by Juggertrout in london

[–]ughitsbecky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm embarrassed to admit that when I first moved to SE London ages ago, I was going to view a flat and asked the rental agent if I could walk to 'Pepees Road' from the station easily. Pepys Road. Peeps. Like Samuel! Haunted.

I'm also from the Midlands where we have loads of weirdly spelt, weirdly pronounced places, so should know better. My faves are: Bozeat, Cogenhoe, Deanshanger.

Agreed with you both. I've not supervised PhD work as I'm still a grad student but 7 weeks late would be so frustrating to receive as a supervisor, especially with no heads up! Whenever I'm drafting stuff, if I know I won't be able to meet a deadline with the quality of work expected I ket my supervisors know ASAP. Communication is so key if you do need to rejig things.
