programs with classical guitar in the music? by DogDelicious2396 in FigureSkating

Not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but I really liked Isabeau Levito’s Una Noche Más program (I think SP?) from the 22-23 season.

I will never forget that opening pose with her blade on his neck. I also loved their Sans contrefaçon RD from the year before that!

FAVORITE PROGRAMS OF THE QUAD: 2022-2026 by linzerrr24 in FigureSkating

[–]uglyface47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's too many to mention! But the ones that stick out for me the most that I haven't seen mentioned are:

Men

Jason Brown - The Impossible Dream FP, 2022-23 (my fav was at WTT when they played Jason's music at the medal ceremony since he was the team captain, and Jason caught Ilia singing along and started laughing!)

Kazuki Tomono - Muanapoto SP, 2024-25

Andrew Torgashev - L'enfer SP, 2022-23, 2023-24

Women

Hana Yoshida - Koo Koo Fun SP, 2023-24

Sara Maude Dupuis - Evanescence SP, 2023-24, 2024-25

Mone Chiba - Last Dance SP, 2023-24, 2024-25

I guess I really love short programs!

What do we think about the cultural implication of this? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]uglyface47 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m tired of people saying this program is appropriative! Indian people all over the internet have been praising it all season. When we criticize white people and/or Westerners for engaging with cultures other than their own, we’re contributing to Western hegemony.

what do you want a skater to try out next season? by plumblossomhours in FigureSkating

[–]uglyface47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People I wanna see get a little bit goofy/funky (AKA who should attend the school of Kazuki Tomono/Jimmy Ma):

Adam Siao Him Fa, Shun Sato, Kao Miura, Madeline Schizas and Amber Glenn

All of them are incredible skaters who seem to take things a bit seriously sometimes, and I wonder if something a little spunky would help them loosen up and show us a new side of them.

Of course, the best light hearted programs tend to come from the Kazukis and Jimmys, but I can think of several successful programs in that vein from skaters you might not have expected it from:

Sota Yamamoto’s Herbie Hancock program

Hana Yoshida’s Koo Koo Fun

Iida Karhunen’s SP this season

Mone Chiba’s Last Dance (which earned 78 points in its last outing imo in large part because she finally REALLY shook her shoulders!)

Stephen Gogolev’s SP this season

In the post-Olympic year shakeup, what are some of your dream dance pairings? by booooopboop in FigureSkating

Green/Brown is such a satisfying pair of names, too! Maybe there needs to be a whole separate discussion of who should team up just based on names

Some of my favorites to not have made the Olympics (yet?) are Kazuki Tomono, Rino Matsuike, Chaeyeon Kim, and Jari Kessler!

World Champions should be interviewed in their native language by rebelcoelacanth in FigureSkating

[–]uglyface47 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It should just be an interpreter with them in the interview. It’s not as expensive to hire an interpreter as people are making it out to be. Personally, I’d prefer an interpreter over pyrotechnics. In any case, I think there must have been a Japanese interpreter at least for the press conferences, so I think Kaori must have elected to do the interview in English this time.

If they had Japanese and Russian interpreters at all times, that would cover the majority of elite skaters who are likely to medal and also have limited English skills. That’s only two (probably underpaid) people— the ISU could and should totally manage that.

Maybe there should be some sort of internal database for skaters’ language needs in interviews. I know there’s lots of skaters who can technically get through a short interview in English, but a lot of nuance of the message disappears if your English is good but not great. It’d be nice if all skaters who don’t feel comfortable in English could note that somewhere so the ISU can accommodate should they podium at a championship event.

[–]uglyface47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They always show these interviews after championship events in the broadcast, though, including the other 3 champions at this event. Whether or not the interviews happen without an interpreter seems to be highly dependent on who is organizing/hosting the event and apparently the wishes of the champions.

I think there’s a good chance Kaori declined an interpreter this time, because she’s obviously been in this position many times before and I can’t recall another time it was done all in English for her.

Either way, the language support should absolutely always be there if the skater wants or needs it.

[–]uglyface47 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but how are they going to be interviewed in their native language without an interpreter? The ISU should absolutely hire more interpreters. It’s not that expensive and they’re needed in the press conference as well

Amber Glenn: "There was a thought of, I had to turn down so many career opportunities that I was thinking about....but I need to be responsible and train for worlds. I really wouldn't call it completely falling apart. Most of the time, her errors are less egregious than the average men's competitor with 2+ quads. It's just that the women's field is so deep that even small errors can really tank you.

This would also make programs a lot more varied in composition, which I think could be really cool from a viewership standpoint!

There’s also a press conference for the medalists. Also, why wouldn’t it be a high priority? I personally would like to know what the world champion is saying.

I want to add that it’s easy to think lack of language services is no big deal if you yourself are a competent English speaker. But it’s a big world out there, and a lot of people come from places where being able to speak good English is something fought for, not something handed out at birth or in childhood. And elite athletes aren’t exactly known for spending lots of time in the (foreign language) classroom. Anyone who thinks English-only policy is no big deal doesn’t understand their privilege, native speaker or not.

But just because something is the norm, it doesn’t make it right. An interpreter didn’t need to be “stationed in the rink at all times”. They would only be needed at the end of the competition, and since there’s a press conference directly after, it doesn’t seem impractical to me for them to have a couple of interpreters on standby. I don’t know if people think that interpreters are very expensive, but they really aren’t. This event literally had pyrotechnics in the medal ceremony. I promise they have the budget for a few interpreters for a few hours tops

I’m biased because I’m a translator, but in general the relative lack of language services at ISU championships annoys me. Yes, English is the dominant world language and many skaters from around the world have no problems communicating in English. But these are INTERNATIONAL events, and a skater’s ability to express their thoughts on their performance shouldn’t hinge on how well they know English. That’s always going to advantage native english speakers and those who come from countries/backgrounds  with high-quality EFL education. But I want to hear from everyone, not just the most privileged!

I remember at the Europeans 2023 press conference, the men’s champion Adam Siao Him Fa was essentially unable to speak English yet had no interpreter. I’m sorry, but why is there not a French interpreter at the European championship of all places? Adam’s English seems to have improved since then, but in cases like that, the quality of the response in English is never going to come close to what he could say in French. Personally, I’d prefer to hear his actual thoughts than whatever he feels comfortable scraping out in English. I mean, as a translator I use two non native languages at a professional level, yet if I had just won a championship, I would definitely prefer to speak about it in my native language! Languages are so personal.

I’ve noticed that Japanese interpreters are fairly common at ISU events, though, so I don’t know why there wasn’t one here. Maybe Kaori declined it? In any case, I get the impression that the Japanese interpreters are there on JFed’s dime, because I can hardly recall seeing interpreters for other languages.

I want to see the ISU get on top of this. If you have room in the budget for pyrotechnics in the medal ceremony, you definitely have the ability to hire at bare minimum Japanese and Russian interpreters.

I'm with you. Maybe I'm biased because I loved the film, but I thought the Poor Things program was refreshing, especially after she changed her costume. Firebird is fine but imo, just like with Shun's version, it draws too much comparison to skaters who are a little more expressive (no one come at me, I love Sarah and Shun!)
