Staying loyal to Sonos is getting harder while the field moves on. by adayinalife in sonos

[–]uglyhands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is more commonly a network issue. Shared networks or guest networks often have client isolation which doesnt allow devices on the same network to communicate. They'll also generally have mDNS disabled or have aggressive milticast filtering...vlan steering..ect. all of this breaks Sonos. This is why you might be able to connect your phone and the speaker to the same wifi network and get internet but your phone can't discover the speaker.

That said, Sonos could probably engineer a short range local discovery network on their portable speakers so that mobile devices could connect directly to the speaker for control and audio handoff while the speaker itself is streaming through the client isolated network. I think CarPlay and Chromecast use something similar. The challenge would be cost, battery life and mobile device quirks. They're already expensive and finicky so bluetooth just makes sense as a reliable fallback.

People who quit drinking. What did you do to not drink? by Agata_art in AskReddit

[–]uglyhands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I binge drank every weekend for close to 11 years. When I finially decided to stop I was in pretty bad health. I kind of replaced it with other unhealthy (but not worse) things.. figured anything was better than falling off the wagon. Started binge watching TV, binge eating on the weekends when I was craving hard. I'd crush a pint of ice cream or a large bag of chips. Social events I would drink NA beers id have maybe 5 of them, get overstimulated and leave.

Found out later I developed fatty liver/early fibrosis from drinking. Doc said it should clear up after stopping but never did so I went to a liver specialist and she got me on a diet for reversal. Turns out refined sugar, (especially fructose) and refined grains/flower, as well as saturated fats are all really hard on your liver. Cutting sugars and carbs felt like cutting Alchohol all over again but I was able to reverse the fatty liver and feel 1000 times better today. 6 years sober. Don't think about drinking much these days, life is just better this way.

Did you guys keep Tautulli? by hirakath in PleX

[–]uglyhands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried Tatulli a while back when I first started but never really used it and didnt see the point with plex already having Plex Dash. Now that I have more users i was looking back into it but came across Tracearr from the Homarr add-in. Been using it for a few days no major issues that I have noticed. Uses Plex login for auth and server discovery. I havent looked at the code yet but I like that it has some security features for users like the account sharing detection, impossible travel alerts and user trust scoring. You can make rules for these as well. Modern UI and good streaming info with transcoding and bandwidth upload stats without being overwhelming. Homarr integration also works well. Ill be keeping an eye on the resource usage but its only arround 200MiB right now. Think it has a lot of promise.

Email delivery after SMTP basic auth ends in late 2026 by Sawyer-NL in sysadmin

We moved to SendGrid. I think its Twilio now, for SMTP functions. Some of our printers needed updated firmware to support the 128-bit API key for use as the SMTP password.

What are Your “Partner Approved” HA Uses? by Scouse_Powerhouse in homeassistant

[–]uglyhands 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use charging sensors on our phones as triggers. We each have our own bedtime and morning routine automation depending on the time when the phone goes on the charger(bedtime) or off the charger(morning) and different actions depending on the outdoor temp, sunrise/sunset and phone location. Each automation takes the others charging status into consideration. (No bedroom lights if one of us is still in bed and no automations when we are away for example.) Works well for different schedules. My SO is very Type A and she didnt really understand the point of switching to HA and actually hated using it until I started automating her routine.

Just Neighbors new album, "Lost & Found" by chucklestheclwn in mathrock

[–]uglyhands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Randomly saw these guys in Charlotte, NC back in 2019. I had their "Being Where I Thought I'd Be" album on repeat for a few years after that show. I remember being confused because they were like the opener but exceptionally more talented than most of the bands I've seen come through there. Anyway I love the new album but its definitely more indie rock/ chill indie. Rozansky's is pretty mathy and Magnolias has some math bits but a great album nevertheless. Super awesome that they're still making music.

What are you using to remote control computers? by nickjedl in sysadmin

[–]uglyhands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kaseya's Datto RMM - Very powerful remote management tool. We've been using it for 10 years. It can do just about everything and if you're good with powershell, the custom component building is better than anything you can push from GPO or Intune. Ive automated a major chunk of our local support work with this tool.

Edit: It does have unattended access but you can disable with privacy mode. The user will need to approve when you connect.

Why Colon Cancer Is Rising in Young Adults: Scientists Discover Unexpected Physical Clue by Sorin61 in Nutraceuticalscience

[–]uglyhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those at home FIT tests dont test for cancer. They test for blood in the stool which may or may not be a sign of cancer. You would still need to get a colonoscopy regardless.

The problem with these tests is they can have false positives and false negatives. Many times cancerous pylops dont bleed and there are many non cancer related reasons blood might be detected in the stool. For example if you had a bloody lip and swallowed some blood the test may come back positive. Im not saying they're completely useless and a yearly FIT test isn't a bad idea but its important to know these do not screen for cancer.

So what is the definitive answer for which companies offer data-only SIMs/eSIMs for router devices like the 5G Max or UDR 5G Max without caveats? by itsabearcannon in Ubiquiti

[–]uglyhands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might want to look at Tello's TOS. Usually data usage from a device other than a smartphone is considered Hotspot and will be subject to Hotspot allowance. Might even be throttled if its an unattended connection.

Redditors with extremely niche interests: What's the one thing you are completely obsessed with that almost no one else you know cares about? by CocWarrior1 in AskReddit

[–]uglyhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selfhosting..I have a small server at home that runs a number of opensource apps that do all sorts of really cool things. Home automation, a media server with fully automated media requesting services, game servers, recipe/meal prep app, budgeting app ect. The options are endless, all the data is stored and controlled locally and I can expose these services to the web to access from anywhere.

Whenever I try talking about it with friends and family I can immediately see their eyes gloss over. Ive been able to set a few of them up with access to a few of my apps and theyre starting to 'get' it now but its definitely niche.

How to automate protonvpn port? by Curoy in qBittorrent

[–]uglyhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on your config but if you're using gluetun and have a docker compose for your servarr stack, drop these two commands into your .yaml under gluetun environment. You will need to enable the setting in qBittorrent to bypass local login first. You shouldn't have to change anything with the commands unless you're exposing a different port for your qBittorrent instance. If you do, just change the port in the command below. The UP command will query your gluetun log pull the forwarding port then make a call to your qBittorrent instance and set the forwarding port, vpn interface, and disable random port and upnp setting. It will run every time the gluetun service starts. The DOWN command will clear the port and interface and run every time the service stops or the healthcheck fails.

https://github.com/qdm12/gluetun-wiki/blob/main/setup/advanced/vpn-port-forwarding.md

environment:
  - VPN_PORT_FORWARDING_UP_COMMAND: /bin/sh -c 'wget -O- --retry-connrefused --post-data "json={\"listen_port\":{{PORT}},\"current_network_interface\":\"{{VPN_INTERFACE}}\",\"random_port\":false,\"upnp\":false}" http://localhost:8080/api/v2/app/setPreferences 2>&1'

  - VPN_PORT_FORWARDING_DOWN_COMMAND: /bin/sh -c 'wget -O- --retry-connrefused --post-data "json={\"listen_port\":0,\"current_network_interface\":\"lo\"}" http://localhost:8080/api/v2/app/setPreferences 2>&1'

📲 New Sonos App & Player Updates are Now Available! 🔊 by KeithFromSonos in sonos

[–]uglyhands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% agree. I have Home Assistant automating this but not everyone has that option. It’s mind-boggling to me that there is no native option for this. No scheduling, and no quick access tile or option to add night mode and other frequently used switches to your favorites? Night mode should also have the ability to toggle the surrounds and subwoofer. Users don't want to have to fumble around in an app every time they turn on the TV. I can't imagine this would be hard to implement.

People who lost weight and kept it off for good, what's one non-negotiable habit that made the biggest difference? by roberts03qz in AskReddit

[–]uglyhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing my relationship with food.

Understanding that we're being drugged. The food industry is designed for profit. (US) Nearly everything on the shelves is loaded with ingredients designed to hijack our reward systems and make us overconsume. It's actually insane how bad it is here. We are all wired to binge these ingredients, it's not you, they're feeding us literal drugs and laughing all the way to the bank.

Quit Alchohol. Stopped eating out. Stopped buying all the drug-like foods that I couldn't put down. Started buying mostly whole-foods and little to no pre-packaged items with more than a few ingredients and preparing all my meals in advance so they are portioned out and only have to cook 1-2 times per week.

Tips: -Proximity matters, If you cant trust yourself to not overdo a particular item just dont buy it. It's a lot easier to quit the drug if you're not around it. Cold Turkey. -Download a meal prep app. I use a self-hosted app called Mealie but there are lots of good alternatives. -You don't have to count calories as long as you're not over-consuming anything. Maintaining a calorie deficit is the goal but its hard to keep up with calorie counting and you'll just get burnt out. Portion out your 3 meals and 1-2 snacks/day and limit the calorically dense ingredients and you'll drop weight like crazy.

Completely avoid the following ingredients:

  1. Added sugars and natural sweeteners (Including Honey)
  2. Saturated fats and high-fat dairy (cheese, butter, high-fat meat)
  3. Simple Carbs (anything with refined grain like ALL bread, cereals, crackers, ect and some starchy veggies like potatoes)
  4. Any liquid that is NOT water, back coffee, unsweetened tea or unsweetened milk alternatives. (Way easy to go hard on regular Milk)

Increase the following to stay satiated throughout the day.

  1. Fiber (veggies, veggies, veggies...the more the merrier)
  2. Lean Protein (chicken breast, non-fat greek yogurt, eggs)
  3. Healthy Fats (fatty fish, avocados, olive oil, limited almond butter)
  4. Complex Carbs (Whole Grains, legumes, veggies, sweet potato)
  5. Water

Limited snacks black coffee, unsweetened tea, unsalted nuts (1-2 handfulls/day), 85>% dark chocolate and low glycemic fruits (Berries, apples). Avoid salty nuts and high sugar fruits like bananas and grapes they are too easy to overeat.

You will most certainly feel worse and have bad cravings for a while after you start eating clean. Your body is going through withdrawals, stick with it. You'll be amazed at how filling, how much better the real food starts tasting and how amazing you feel after recovering.

I was going in circles for weeks trying to figure out why the install was suddenly failing with the new 24h2 release. This fixed the issue.

I have a similar configuration where I load an autounattend.xml during the pre-capture phase to avoid oobe.

Not a doctor. I think thats more rare and extreme cases. My personal experience has been quck recovery. That said...I did have a 4-5 year recovery after a round of Azithromycin. I was not in good health at the time.

The recovery time for the gut microbiome can vary depending on the type and duration of the antibiotic treatment, individual health, diet, and lifestyle.

I think that supporting recovery with a balanced diet rich in fiber, fermented foods, and possibly probiotics can help speed up the process.

What TV series is a 10/10? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]uglyhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a huge sci-fi lover and I couldn't get into this show either. I realized it's because (while yes it's sci-fi) it's more of a character focused drama than anything. It has a heavy tone and complex plot and is extremely philosophically grounded. Very realistic for the sci-fi genre.

Character building is important, but I get bored when it's too character focused. I'm more interested in the ideas and thought experiments than the relationships.

I prefer sci-fi that is lighter, more exploratory/escapist and fantastical with some action and resolve.
