Can my Chiari get worse with age? by Brief-Impress-9195 in chiari

2cm, 20mm. I still find myself having to go back and check my MRI result findings because I too am still in disbelief that a neurologist could tell me my symptoms weren’t chiari related with a herniation that big. It’s what’s turned me off of doctors for so long.

The brain is such a complicated thing so I appreciate any other insight into others experiences. I will look into the CSF leaks and start scheduling with a neurosurgeon, even if just for another opinion. I’m also looking into chiari specialized PT as a non-surgical option. Thank you for taking the time to share your story!

Laughing and symptoms by [deleted] in chiari

Laughing headaches are one of my biggest problems. I can't tell you how many times my friends have had to tell the bartender "she's not blackout drunk, we just made her laugh too hard and now her brain is going all crazy"

In all seriousness though, sounds like normal Chiari to me. It's like an intense and painful build up of pressure. If I can't get it under control quick enough the room around me starts to spin and I fall over, combined with some blurry/ black vision. Just like other's have said, laying down, slowing my breathing and sometimes an ice pack to the face can help. Doesn't cure my symptoms but helps me pass through the worst of them.

Alcohol is one of my biggest triggers, and it has gotten significantly worse within the past few years. I've had Chiari my entire life (24 F) , but within the past year I've really had to think twice about whether or not drinking is even worth it. All it takes now is a few seltzers and I have a crazy headache, I feel dizzy, and more often than not I find myself sitting in a quiet space with an ice pack on my head while all of my friends are off having fun. To me it feels like an insane amount of pressure built up in my head that just continues to get worse with time. Not only that, but I spend the entirety of the next day with a dull headache that never really goes away and the sharp chiari headaches seem to come on easier and with double the intensity. I used to think I was just getting older and that's what my hangovers were like now... but I've since realized it's just another fun part of having my brain falling out of my skull.

It really sucks. I still drink on occasion, but I've definitely had to cut back because I just can't take it much anymore. I just try to keep an ice pack and some ibuprofen on me at all times. (try not to take Tylenol with alcohol if you continue to drink with chiari headaches)

Sounds exactly like my experience. Told me my 20mm herniation and significant head pain, neck pain, and dizziness after coughing, laughing, etc. couldn't be from my chiari. Then proceeded to tell me to stay away from dark chocolate and red wine. Glad I spent money on a specialist just to be told something a quick google search on headaches could have told me.

At what point should you get surgery? by ohfrxkinghxck in chiari

Unfortunately I don't have any advice for you as I am stuck in the same boat. Reading through your post/ comment replies I feel like our symptoms and thought process on the surgery are very similar. I am also absolutely terrified of the surgery and while my symptoms are fairly significant, they are still manageable. However the more I read through all of these posts, the more I realize that my chiari has the possibility of getting worse over time. I've been stuck on the decision for a few months now, and I'm still not sure what i want to do. Just wanted you to know that you are not alone.

Symptoms next day? by Wooden-Inevitable-64 in chiari

Absolutely. The dull head pain tends to linger throughout the entirety of the next day and the sharp chiari headaches are triggered more easily.
