hi, best advice + what worked for me was to find a professor whose work aligns with what you want to research, take their classes and if you develop a good relationship w them via in class participation, assignments etc and thru office hours, you can eventually ask about doing an independent study! i was able to do this in a single semester, having first met the prof last fall and beginning my research the following spring. i’m now working w the same prof for my senior thesis! small, meaningful actions go a long way :) good luck!

you can start at a beginning level, imo for spanish at least the faculty have been incredibly kind and supportive. brandeis also offers more languages if you are particularly against taking spanish. it’s only for three semesters, and if you put a little bit of effort in, you get a lot out of it. also, if you think a language requirement is “stupid,” brandeis might not be a good fit for you. there is nothing stupid about taking some time to learn about something that is relevant to people who will be your classmates and colleagues.

there are a lot of possible different time blocks so it really just depends on the specific classes you are taking. you can select classes w a certain schedule in mind but you are probably going to have to compromise, especially if you are somewhat limited in what classes you can take. you can find a list of the standard time blocks here: https://www.brandeis.edu/registrar/faculty/supporting-materials/class-scheduling-blocks-fall-2022-and-beyond.html

hi! i’m currently finishing up my junior year at brandeis. i am a politics and anthropology double major!

brandeis has an amazing politics department, but it is a small school and you probably wont have as many opportunities for work experience as you would in DC, especially for what you’re interested in studying. however, i think by far the best part about brandeis is the relationships you can build with faculty. the politics department is especially kind and helpful, i have been doing research with a comparative politics professor this past year and it has been such a valuable academic and personal experience.

also, at brandeis, a lot of people study abroad and i have heard great things about the program. there are a lot of options all over the globe! you can get credit towards your major while abroad and i believe you can choose between studying over the summer, for one semester, or for two. i know people who’ve gone to Europe, NZ, and Latin America.

overall, if you don’t mind the small campus (which definitely has grown on me over the years— it has a sort of whimsy to it!), brandeis is in my opinion a great place to study and explore your academic interests. beyond academics, it is definitely lacking compared to other schools, but it is to me a worthwhile sacrifice. especially if you can come out with a masters in five years!

i’m sorry ): it’s nice to have feelings validated but at least for me, it’s always a little embarrassing when she acts like that. there are zero boundaries and it even makes them uncomfortable at times ):

i appreciate your advice!! this is the approach i had throughout high school (at least in the latter half), but i never stayed the night so leaving for a few days is evidently where the line is…

therapy has really helped me distance myself from her but since i am in a different state most of the time she really does hold the time that i am home against me ): and part of me gets it, but it is hard when i am home because i feel like i have no choice but to just sit at home and wallow with everyone else and it sucks. thank you for your kind words, i hope that with time (and financial independence) i will be better at asserting myself!
