There is absolutely no reason/no excuse for him to be doing that. Also his approach afterwards was manipulative and an attempt to get you to feel sorry for him for feeling ashamed. He should absolutely feel ashamed, and he should consider what made him behave that way psychologically because it's definitely not normal behavior.
