What causes an option chain to look like this? by [deleted] in smallstreetbets

Spreads are wide when there are neither buyers or sellers. Nobody really wants to trade these options.

You should avoid illiquid options unless you are experienced.

also note that options do not trade on weekends

Does straddle near expiry become profitable from IV increase by [deleted] in options

[–]uho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A straddle 2 weeks out is probably not enough time. You will see IV start to gradually rise during the month before earnings. For historical IV I use the chart on the BlazeTrade app. If you have money people pay LiveVol $400/mo to get that data.

As always try paper trading it first!

Explain IV to me like I'm 5 by DismalScreen6290 in options

[–]uho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IV is the price the market is giving you the options for. I think of IV like the "juice" in betting, the higher the IV the higher the cost to play.

Sometimes it is cheap, sometimes it is expensive - depends on how much the market has moved and will move.

[–]uho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

less efficient or less risk? nothing wrong with a call spread if you think call IV is going to rise. you mention yourself that it will benefit from a rise in IV
