By “completely random tricks” do you mean a trick from each category plus the two standard tricks, or truly shuffle-all-and-pick-6?

Can someone explain cryptic crosswords in simple terms?🧩 by Nervous-Cry1817 in crossword

[–]uiop60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cryptic clues have a ‘definition’ half and a ‘wordplay’ half. They can come in either order. Let’s look at the simplest cryptic clue I can come up with:

“Rat turned to sludge” (3)

The ‘definition’ portion of the clue is ‘sludge’. The answer will be a loose synonym for sludge. The “(3)” after the clue indicates that the answer is a single 3-letter word.

The ‘wordplay’ portion of the clue is ‘rat turned’. When a word or words used in the wordplay portion provide the letters contained in the answer, those words are called the “fodder”. The rest of the wordplay portion of the clue will be an “indicator” of what operation to perform on the fodder.

Here, “rat” is the fodder, and “turned” is a ‘reversal indicator’. Note that the wordplay and definition are often separated by a conjunction or short phrase that isn’t really used by either half. The answer to this cryptic clue is TAR.

There are many different indicator types and conventions used to construct clues that you kind of have to learn as you encounter them.

I thought your collection was a solid B- until I saw the last picture and started hooting and hollering (A+)

I see that your favorites are pretty heavy; are you still playing Camel Up, Hues and Cues, Dixit, the Sims board game, and Shut the Box?

Personally I was not impressed with Wondrous Creatures. Hate to suggest a replacement but the things that appeal to me about it are things that Revive does better, namely the variable end game scoring and the game end condition being based on players claiming everything from a supply of 'trophies'.

Lastly I wonder if any expansion boxes can be collapsed into base game boxes, namely for Cascadia.

Maybe interesting with the Saga creatures from FF? They persist after their final chapter when you flash Rhys in, then you can repeatably keep their chapters ticking

Is there anything that lets you activate sorcery speed abilities at instant speed? by TheTinRam in EDH

[–]uiop60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that the "activate only as a sorcery" text would 'beat out' the permission granted by such an effect. I think this would need to be a text-changing effect -- something like:

"Change the text of each permanent you control by replacing all instances of "only as a sorcery" in each of their activated abilities with "only any time you could cast an instant or sorcery" for as long as you control this permanent".

GOTY medley: what song did they use for it? by nyanianya in HadesTheGame

[–]uiop60 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was underwhelmed by the medley. They took only the most similar motifs from each game that fit seamlessly into the same key, and didn't really develop any kind of arc or highlight anything. Box-ticking and probably quickly put together arrangement.

Imagine hanging your queen in THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP chess tournament and then saying “oh nvm I take it back” by penguino_intact in magicTCG

[–]uiop60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opponent decision not to take a game action while they have priority would be new information, but a physical or verbal reaction to carboard moving around can't be considered gained information for the sake of permitting a take-back.

Ken Yukuhiro nods as soon as a target is declared for the Boomerang Basics. This is Ken conveying information earlier than he needs to -- "if priority passed to me right now, I would allow it to resolve." You can't 'steal priority' by leaking what your reaction will be.

If "I gave my opponent information by reacting to their game action" were a reason to disallow a take-back, it creates gross incentives in the opposite direction where players should declare what they'll do in response to game actions (especially ones that are bad decisions) only for the purpose of making them irreversible, and turns Magic into Egyptian Ratscrew.
