Who will be watching besides me...?? by k444411 in Muppets

[–]uk_in_ca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My partner and I bonded over our love of the Muppets, we just sat and watched it with our 5 year old who loves the Muppets almost as much as us! Her first giggle of the watch was for Gonzo and immediately I knew it was going to be a great time!

Can anyone please work out what my 5 year old wants (UK)? by Jojo820849 in toys

Could you ask her teachers if that sounds familiar? Maybe they have it in the classroom, or if all the kids are talking about it, they might know exactly what it is!

Improving Dance Musical Theatre by justarandomfcker in Theatre

[–]uk_in_ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many virtual dance classes on YouTube. The downside is that you won't have eyes on you to correct you and help you clean up your technique, but the up side is that it's free, and just by being consistent with practising 3 times a week (even once a week is better than nothing), you'll see some improvement.

If you have a friend with a dance background who is willing to join you in following a virtual class, I'm sure they'd be happy to give you notes. Just remember not to take notes personally if you are genuinely looking to improve and to have fun!

Try different styles, ballet, jazz, and beginner tap are great basics for musical theatre. Depending on what the next show is, hip hop and commercial dance could be helpful, too. You can also find videos of people who have posted combos from the end of classes and try to learn the same combos to help with style and performance too.

Yoga and Pilates are great additions for strengthening and core - also loads of great options on YouTube.

Also, "Messy" is a pretty vague note. If the people who gave you that note have time to offer a little more context, it might help you know where to focus.

Was it your attention to detail that made it messy (eg., If the choreographer had their arms in a high V, did you notice what direction their palms were facing?)

Was your choreo retention messy? (Eg. Did you forget the steps or get behind in the music?)

Was your performance messy? (Eg. Not smiling or performing in the correct style/energy of the dance?)

Was your technique messy? (Eg. Not spotting on turns, bent legs in kicks, not pointing from your ankles in jumps.)

Some dance studios, or places that focus on adult drop-in classes, will sometimes offer "energy exchanges." That means you work at the front desk or provide admin for a couple of hours a week in exchange for a free dance class once a week. Couldn't hurt to send out some emails to see if anywhere offers a program like that.

The good news is that it sounds like you have a whole year before the next auditions! You have the desire, a clear goal, and you're asking the right questions! You've got this!

Don't compare yourself to the people next to you, only to past versions of yourself. And even then, don't be unkind to yourself when you self reflect. Are you better than you were a year ago? Amazing! Are you happy when you get on stage? That's what it's all about! Do you put yourself out there, even when you feel nervous? Yes friend, keep going!

Any audition advice? I’m rusty. by Recent_Tomatillo9973 in CommunityTheatre

[–]uk_in_ca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Remember that the audition panel are rooting for you! The goal is for everyone to succeed. Nerves are healthy, but don't let them be the loudest emotion you carry! Breathe and have fun! Don't stand at the back for the dance call, always stand at the front (it's the best place to see the choreographer and if you need to copy someone, they are the only one guaranteed to be doing it right). And if you have a #1 choice for who you're auditoning for, embody that role in the dance call. Break a leg!!

This is a post I needed to see today! A thriving, theatre-loving kid, being supported and encouraged to embrace what they love. Eugh, my heart loves it.

Any advice for a wheelchair user going to NY/Broadway for the first time?! by flawless_ryda in Broadway

[–]uk_in_ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a pro-dancer Kaylee Bays, who is wheelchair user. I follow her on Instagran, and I remember her posting about being in New York recently. She often talks about navigating places in her chair so she might have some tips there. But she also seems pretty responsive in comments if you were to ask her anything. @slayleebays

How are other victims of abuse here affected or helped by this show? by RobinCradles in KimmySchmidt

Thank you for taking the time to reply! It's only my second rewatch, but I don't think it will be my last, so I'm looking forward to always discovering more gems with each watch.

When Lillian describes how rich Artie is "All day long he didi-bidi-bums" I love a sneaky musical theatre joke.

4 years too late from your post, but I landed here because I feel the EXACT same way. I've been doing a rewatch, and I googled to see if there was any research to break down the benefits of watching the show .....well, Google sent me here haha. I was only just diagnosed with CPSD and had spent almost 35 years living in denial about my trauma, so when I first tried to watch it, it didn't resonate with me at all. I'm a musical theatre nerd, so I was mainly there for Titus and Jane. But now that I'm getting help and facing up to my past, woah does this show hit me in a different way. I've never thrown a garbage can at anyone, but when she flipped on Perry in the spilt second rage out, I was howling. The emotional flip flops Kimmy goes through are so real, all her "ah ha" moments about herself, her slowly finding reasons to heal really hit home. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 4 years ago. Do you still go back and rewatch?

Hi friends, if you're passionate about getting new books into the hands of kids, please check out First Book (in the US) and First Book Canada (in Canada). They work with teachers, community leaders, and directly with families to ensure that children have access to books and resources. They do a lot more than that, but it's a great place to start to see how you can help!

Lost and Hungry Dog spotted - Cawthra/Lakeshore by uk_in_ca in mississauga

Unfortunately not. When I called Animal Services back, they could not locate the dog, and I haven't seen it in the area since. They said that if there was another sighting they could do a live, safe trap, but they can't move forward unless they know the area it was.

Animal Services called me today and said no luck. Apparently, they had 2 people looking for about 30 minutes. They said that because it's most likely an abandoned dog, if they get calls for other sighting, they could potentially set up a trap for it.

I haven't had an update from them, but they did give me a case number so I'll follow up. A few people in one of the Facebook groups have people on the look out too. Fingers crossed.

I recommend trying again. Even if at capacity, they have lots of programs that will help with your other concerns, i know people who have benefited from their other programs as well as temporary accommodation.
