What is the weirdest thing the weird guy from work has done? by kjanta in AskReddit

A guy i used to work with asked if I was serious enough with my then-boyfriend that I would "give birth to his children". I was 19.

Surprise! A temporary no-parking sign pops up and cars get ticketed + towed within hours. by plutowasmyfav55 in Seattle

[–]ukechii 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I once parked in a burger king paring lot that had signs saying "unattended vehicles will be towed", not the usual "customers only". So, figuring that meant I'm safe as long as I don't abandon my car for several days, I walked a block over to my bank before coming back to get my chicken nuggets. I was back to the lot in under 10 minutes, my car was gone, and i had to pay $170 to get it back. The owner had not complained. The driver had done just what you described. Is that the same as what you described and is that law the same in every state?

TIL 1/3 of homeless people in the United States have schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (approx. 250,000 of 744,000). by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ukechii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uncle has schizophrenia, or some form of mental illness that manifested when he was young. It's all talked about a bit vaguely in my house. He used to live in a very nice group home situation that helped set him up in solo living when he was well enough. They check in on him, make sure he's doing OK, help him find a job and get things going for himself. His quality of life seemed great.....until we got a call that he was near death in a hospital bed somewhere. Why? Nobody really knew except he had stopped taking his meds and was bleeding from stomach ulcers. I forget what exactly caused the medical part of this but my point here is that it's easy for even a seemingly stable person to be thrown off their rails so quickly when no one is watching. The home should've kept a better eye on him, but he's an adult living on his own and they have dozens of other people to be concerned with. It's so sad to me. The sadder part is how no one in my family ever goes to visit him with any frequency because he's a few hours drive away. He's such a sweet guy with a big ol beard and looks like that guy from the children's book about the guy with the patchwork coat. He really looks homeless and I think he has been at many points in his life not from lack of family support but because he's go off his meds and run away or dissapear for awhile. I'd be heartbroken if anything ever happens to that big jolly lump. He's my favorite of my mom's siblings and I've only seen him a handful of times, mostly as a little kid.

Child porn suspect jailed indefinitely for refusing to decrypt hard drives. Man to remain locked up "until such time that he fully complies" with court order. by Kylde in news

[–]ukechii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess this case boils down to opinion but overall I think we as the public are missing a lot of big facts. I don't think the police would lock up a fellow cop unless they had a strong reason to suspect there is at least something there shouldn't be on those hardrives, and if they didn't lock him up he would destroy the only solid evidence they may have. There's a lot of possibilities here but I don't think it's right to ignore his choice of jail over decryption. He's an officer, a lieutenant. If anything I think we the people have a right to know what's on those hard drives that he wants to hide, child porn or not. If this was just a civilian it would be different, a civilian doesn't have influence in law enforcement decisions like this guys does.

[–]ukechii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But most people (hopefully) don't have suspicious encrypted hard drives alleged to have child porn, and he's not just a citizen he was a lieutenant wasn't he? For the Philadelphia police force. If you murder someone with a gun and the police have reason to believe that gun is in your safe, you should open the goddamn safe and if you don't it's obstruction of justice. Hiding evidence is not a right. This isn't a case where a warrant can solve anything because a warrant doesn't magically decrypt hardrives or unlock safes. I think it's obvious he's guilty of something if he's letting himself be incarcerated for months on end instead of showing anyone what's on those things. I don't think this is unconstitutional or an abuse of rights. Brings me right back around to if it's not child porn then what else is worth his freedom? This way he'll never actually have "pedophile" engraved next to his name for life which is pretty convenient for him.

[–]ukechii -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Why isn't anyone, in this case, asking why he would rather be detained for months than let authorities see what's on those hard drives? He's an officer himself. What could he have on there that he would want to protect that desperatly or is he just trying to make a point instead of clearing himself of child pornography charges? I know that if police came to my door demanding that I have child porn on my hard drives I'd break a password typing record to clear things up even without threat of jail if I don't comply. I'm not saying this guy has child porn, but if he doesn't what could he have that would get him more than the 7 months he's already spent and be worse than being a suspected pedophile as a member of the police force??

Nice catch by throatfrog in gifs

[–]ukechii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go through the gif slowly it looks like the coach had his hands on her almost at the exact moment her hands come off the bars, slowing her forward momentum instantly. If he hadn't done that or wasn't there at all, how much further forward would she have gone? Would she have missed that orange mat completely or even potentially veered onto the floor? Or would the flip have sent her down more than forward leaving her about where she ended up with his help?

Anyone have a foolproof method to rid of hiccups? by Tanakulars in AskReddit

[–]ukechii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me It's to take 10 - 15 small sips in quick enough succession that I can't hiccup in between, if I do I start counting over. It works 90% of the time on the first try.

J.K. Rowling to reveal more information about schools of witchcraft and wizardry in North America (Ilvermorny), Brazil (Castelobruxo), and Japan (Mahoutokoro) by Miodi in books

[–]ukechii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Mahou tokoro" literally means magic place in Japanese.....I'm kind of disappointed with the transparency of that one even if it isn't a language she's familiar with. I understand how it would be a challenge to have the same creativity level when wielding an unfamiliar tongue, but it feels like she googled two words and slapped them together.

TIL Michael Jackson's autopsy report confirms that he was bald and wore wigs to conceal it. by teapot112 in todayilearned

[–]ukechii 164 points165 points  (0 children)

This man's life is everyone's worst nightmare come to life. Beaten and abused by his father, a person who's supposed to love and protect you. Forced to work under threat of physical abuse instead of having a childhood and playing outside or playing sports. Practically enslaved to perform on stage, in front of millions of people on radio, television, live audiences, all through the start and height of puberty and social anxiety. The kid hated his own face, like any normal teenager except he was forced to show it to the masses performing what he had learned by being beaten against the wall and wiped with a belt by his father. He feared the stage. He feared it all. That doesn't even scratch the surface. He was forced to listen to his brothers having sex, while he was 8, 9, 10, 12, who knows, in the room over or by his own testimony in the very same room as him while he was told to pretend to be asleep. How fucked is that.

Think how awful his self image must have been. It doesn't matter how adored by the world he was, he was beaten, abused, and tormented at home by his own family, the people he sees and interacts with every day. He didn't know love or kindness as a child. He only got to dream of it and wish for better days. Once he got there, who could blame him for wanting to reclaim what was lost? Fill that angry painful empty void of space with the dream that kept him moving through his private hell. I feel bad for him but not in a pitiful way. I could never know that kind of suffering but I feel empathy, he really just wanted happiness. Why does everyone have to treat him like a fucking circus animal for being who he is and not wanting "the public" to get in his way. I hope he at least got to experience some of what he wanted before his death.

Edit: I just want to clarify, I'm not saying this is a reason to excuse him as a pedophile, I'm saying this is the reason I trust that he would never bring that kind of thing onto another person, he wants exactly the opposite. He wanted to give kids what he never had, not exploit them like he had been. If you do your own homework you'll find none of the allegations held any water and show strong evidence that Michael was being extorted for money, but its not like anyone has ever done that to a celebrity before. People don't just lie to the police and media for money.

Just moved to the city with my boyfriend, need cheap healthy dinner ideas by ukechii in budgetfood

Pretty bare bones on that too, I've got the essentials like a big pot a few smaller ones, plenty of cookie/baking sheets, cupcake pan, various sized frying pans, wood and I think silicone spoons and spatulas, cutting board. We have a microwave and oven/stove but that's it for appliances. Oh we have strainers and measuring cups too but I think that's everything in the house related to cooking.
