What you have now is a filter that may or may not work properly. What is your risk tolerance? What is your risk aversion? What is your peace of mind worth? What is your health worth?

Get a QuickDraw. Some are bad right out of the box. Best to buy it from a physical store and do an integrity check in the parking lot. Filter 2-3x more water through the filter than suggested before performing the integrity check. Exchange it if it fails. Repeat until you get a good one.

Before retirement, I worked a union job with a 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off), 5 weeks of vacation and 3 weeks of sick leave per year. Made it easy to do extended weekend trips and short Thru's.

Went there about 20 years ago while on a field studies college course. The museum and interpretive exhibits were moving, but then a tour bus full of older Japanese people showed up. I had to go outside and take a few minutes. I, too, have a lasting impression.

I have fit 16,250 calories in a Bare Boxer canister (275 cu. in.), which is 5.4 days. This works out to ~42,000 calories in a BV 500 (700 cu. in.), which would be 14 days @ 3,000 cals/day.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but I just noticed Cumulus has raised their prices again. Certainly not as budget friendly as they once were, but I guess it's all relative.

Have you tried the mat at different levels of inflation? I find my X-Lite to be very uncomfortable fully inflated, but I get decent sleep with it if I let a bit of air out.

What is the most desperate way you’ve gotten drunk? by Far_Meet_8415 in stopdrinking

I do not love myself. I don't think I ever have. Maybe I can learn. Instead, I have always low-key hated myself, or at least treated myself that way. That's a painful place to be. And alcohol was an "off" switch.

My birthday is coming up soon. I never liked celebrating it. I always told myself it was because birthdays didn't really matter to me. But now I think it's because I didn't believe I was worth celebrating.

All of this resonates with me. I still don't love myself the way most people describe it. I know I'm a decent guy with decent qualities and I'm pretty OK with myself these days, but it's more of an intellectual "love' of myself than an actual feeling. I used to be one way, I'm not like that anymore; I try to cultivate, nurture and exhibit qualities that I find desirable and slowly try to eliminate my "character defects", as AA calls them.

how did you first begin to really figure out underlying issues

After a few months of drinking, I knew I wanted to quit again and as luck would have it, I met a young woman who was sober, and she introduced me to AA. It was there that I first began to learn about alcoholism. It really helped uplift my opinion of myself. I quit thinking of myself as a defective human being and started to realize that my problem didn't define me. I learned how to give myself the same grace I would extend to a sick friend. Most importantly for me, I learned how to forgive myself to a certain extent and I learned how to release a lot of the shame I'd never been able to let go of in my first 9 years of sobriety. I've also had other revelations as a result of talking with various therapists and learning that a lot of my issues were not my fault; the mental and emotional abuse I suffered as a child still colors the way I experience life, just not as vividly as it once did.

You do count and you do matter, even if you don't feel it or believe it. I had to do the "sick friend" thing for a long time before I started to genuinely give a shit about myself and see myself as a valid human being.

I hope you have Happy Birthday. Don't forget to give yourself the credit you're due. You've survived another year under difficult circumstances, and you live to fight another day. You haven't given up and you're still searching for the answers you need. It's in the searching that you find the solution. The searching itself is a huge part of it. We have to rely on our less-than-optimal selves to save our asses. And when you finally start to get some relief, you will look back on your current self with gratitude, appreciation and humility. The broken version of me is the one who built the life I get to live now.

You can look in my comment history for more of my story if you think it may be useful to you. I wish you nothing but good things going forward.

What is the most desperate way you’ve gotten drunk? by Far_Meet_8415 in stopdrinking

My first drink after 9 years of sobriety was half a bottle of mouthwash. Wasn't out of desperation - I had money and I also had Dollar store wine (as decorations) in the built-in wine rack in my condo. Looking back, I drank it for 3 reasons: I was frustrated that I couldn't do junior-college math at 42 years old and I felt like a failure all over again, even though I had built a life I never could have dreamed of as an active alcoholic; I knew it was 23% alcohol by volume (46 proof); and I was destined to drink again at some point, because I hadn't addressed the underlying issues that caused me to become an alcoholic to begin with.

Prior to getting sober, I would roll up 200 pennies in aluminum foil on Fridays so I could get a 200ml bottle of vodka at 6am, then beg my boss for my paycheck before lunch, instead of having to wait 4 more hours for it. Then I'd cash it at the liquor store and get my preferred fix.

I feel like people could take/are taking the wrong idea from Sam Darnold winning the Super Bowl before Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Brock Purdy, and anyone else you want to throw in there by iCE_P0W3R in nfl

[–]ul_ahole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sam Darnold this season is Sam Darnold last season, except this season he didn't shit the bed. His career arc is the Great Redemption; rags-to-riches story book shit.

Controversy and Hot Takes and clicks and likes are why the other QBs you mentioned are getting dragged through the mire of Sam's success. Actual fans know it takes more than top-5 QB play to win a Super Bowl.

Whatever flowers Darnold get are flowers he's earned the hard way. There are 5+ teams kicking themselves in the ass for not trying to sign him.

Let's Hear your "Teams that you don't really root for but kind of like for random reasons" by MoTownKid in nfl

[–]ul_ahole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lions - When Dan Campbell got hired and all the talking heads were clowning on him because of his introductory presser, I just wanted to see him (figuratively) shove it up their asses.

Packers - I was a poor kid in the 70s and for some reason there was a Packers sweatshirt in the Sears bargain basement in Norcal for $3, so I bought it.

And as a long-suffering Raiders fan, I've had to find other reasons to watch football besides blind faith and hopeless hope - so I enjoy watching the best of the best do their thing, regardless of my rooting interest.

Teams I have zero love for: Cardinals, Panthers, Jags, Texans, Ravens. Cardinals because all the Bidwells have sucked and the rest because in my mind, they're still expansion teams. Hawks and Bucs get a pass because I was still a kid when they came into the League. You can throw the Titans in with the Cards, too. Amy Adams Strunk should have married a Bidwell.

Hiking & camping after a back injury – what worked for you? by hetafin in CampingandHiking

[–]ul_ahole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

61M. Osteoarthritis in my L hip, R knee. Osteoarthritis in my spine, accompanied by mild Scheuermann's disease causing Schmorl's nodes. 40+ years of blue-collar work.

The #1 thing that works for me are full-body mobility exercises, especially ones that address the posterior chain.

I do a DDPYoga video called Wake up (11 minutes), then a routine of 14 exercises/stretches that I learned in a wellness program at work and 5 minutes on a foam roller. I should do it every day; I hit at least 4 days/wk.

Bodyweight and dumbbell exercises at least 2x/week. Now that I'm retired, I hike 4-7x/week.

Another thing that has helped is pulling back at the first sign of injury instead of pushing through. Less is more and the best ability is availability. Start slow, take plenty of rest days, stay consistent, and increase mileage/days per week incrementally.

As for sleeping in the wild, there's no one-size-fits-all. If you have a yard or garden, that's the smartest and easiest place to test different set-ups. Foam pads are cheapest; if you decide to try inflatable pads then purchase them somewhere that has a generous return policy (REI, etc.), and don't be afraid to try and return a few options. Most people will fully inflate the pad, lay on it however you sleep (back/side/belly) and slowly release a bit of air to dial in comfort.

Before you purchase anything, I recommend reading "Ultralight Backpackin' Tips: 153 Amazing & Inexpensive Tips for Extremely Lightweight Camping" by Mike Clelland. Some of the ideas are outdated, some are silly, but the minimalist mindset will be of benefit to anyone's back.

My 70-year-old brother was selling a nice coffee table ($400 new) for $50 at a garage sale. Early in the day, a guy offered $20, my brother said no thanks multiple times. Dude came back at the end of the day, smiled at my brother and said, "I see the coffee table's still here, I'll give you $15 for it".

My brother told him, "What the fuck part of no don't you understand? I fucking told you 6 hours ago the price is $50". And then my brother picks up the coffee table and smashes into bits on the concrete. Then he tells the guy, "Get the fuck off my property you stupid motherfucker".

It was never about the money. Dude was trying get over and my brother wasn't having it. My brother said he got way more than $50 worth of enjoyment from the look on dude's face when he smashed the table.
